It sometimes feels as though the Lovin’ Spoonful have been reduced to a footnote in the history of rock & roll.
The New Man for The New Decade: Zorba The Buddha

Zorba The Greek is the iconic role played by the famous Hollywood actor the late Anthony Quinn. In his most memorable role, Quinn played a middle-aged rough guide who celebrates life in film during the Sixties – ‘Zorba The Greek’ – that won three Oscars. Based on the novel of the same name by Nikos Kazantzakis, the main character, Zorba eats, drinks, sings, dances; he lives, loves and laughs passionately, totally. Enjoying all his senses, he relishes every moment of his life that is just a game for him.

In Gautama the Buddha, the world knows an Indian prince who abandons his luxurious life – his palaces, his pleasures, his princess and even his infant son – to search his true self in the forest. He starves himself, denies himself until he becomes quiet, calm, still, peaceful, silent, and serene. Finally, he becomes enlightened.

Can Zorba be combined with Buddha?

Naah! One cannot imagine a Buddha who celebrates life, who dances and sings and laughs or a Zorba who sits still, seriously, silently, unsmilingly – and yet this is the combination of two polar opposites Osho presents us as the only alternative to our current madness of the marketplace. The two opposites can never meet until Osho declared that not only they should but they must, if the modern man is to survive.

Says Osho, “Zorba is the roots in the earth, and the Buddha is a longing to fly into ultimate freedom, to reach to the space, which is unbounded. I would like you to be Zorba the Greek and Gautama the Buddha together, simultaneously. Less than that won’t do. Zorba represents the earth with all its flowers and greenery and mountains and rivers and oceans. Buddha represents the sky with all its stars and clouds, and the rainbows. The sky without the earth will be empty. The sky cannot laugh without the earth. The earth without the sky will be dead. Both together – and a dance comes into existence. The earth and the sky dancing together – and there is laughter, there is joy, there is celebration. You have to be whole: rich in the body, rich in science; rich in meditation, rich in consciousness. Only a whole person is a holy person, according to me.”

After what we have suffered in the last decade, for the new decade, a new man is needed – Zorba and Buddha . Zorba alone is hollow. His dance has not an eternal significance, it is momentary pleasure. Soon he will be tired of it. Unless you have inexhaustible sources, available to you from the cosmos itself… unless you become existential, you cannot become whole. The whole person can achieve goals, targets, results, deadlines and all it entails and yet live, love and laugh.

If we want a whole man — and a whole man is the only holy man — then Zorba has to be absorbed into Buddha. They have to be accepted totally as one. Buddha cannot laugh, cannot dance, cannot sing, cannot love. Now what kind of life will it be? Hollow! Zorba can sing, dance, enjoy food, drink, love. He will have a life, but he will not know who he is. He will not know the meaning of existence.

Zorba the Buddha will create a unity in you; your body and soul will have a unity. You will not have to fight against your nature, you can use it as a stepping stone. There is no need to fight, there is no need to repress. If you are one, you would like to dance in the open air under the sun. That will be your real prayer. Nothing is said, nothing is asked, but you are showing your gratitude to existence. Zorba the Buddha will not only destroy the split in man, it will destroy the split in society. He meditates in the marketplace.

It consists of a time of revelry, starting on New Year’s Day, celebrated on the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar, the day of second new moon after the day on which the winter solstice happens, unless there is an intercalary eleventh of twelfth month in the introduction to the chinese new year, in such case the new year falls on the day of the third new moon after the solstice and the new year ending with the full moon on the day of the Lantern festival. The Chinese New Year is an absorbing and colorful holiday and as such is a super beginning into a study of China and Chinese traditions. The spring festival, generally known as Chinese New Year in the western countries, is the most important traditional celebration and a public holiday in China.

The Chinese New Year 2011 starts in February 3 and it is the year of rabbit. The festival goes down on the first day of the first lunar month and ends with Lantern Festival which is on the fifteenth day. The chinese new year 2011 is an yearly official public holiday for many countries, as well as Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Indonesia. The spring festival 2011 is among the greatest public holidays in China, one of the golden weeks. The motive for beginning the Chinese New Year at that time is that it is the time after the plunge harvest. In another words, the suitable time to be satisfied with rest and relaxation and celebrations is between the end of one year’s hustle and the beginning of the next year’s work hard. The chinese new year calendar is a combination of equally solar and lunar phases and it is a century’s old tradition to celebrate the Chinese New Year in the various countries of all over the world from China to North America. The Chinese lunar calendar gives name each of the twelve years after an animal.

The myth has it that the lord Buddha convened all the animals to come to him before he leaved from earth. Only twelve came to proposition him farewell and as a reward he named year after every one in order they arrived. The Chinese civilization believe that animal ruling the year in which a person is born has profound influence on personality, saying as This is the animal that hides in your heart.A time of gratefulness and family togetherness, chinese new year’s eve is spent by offering farewell to the old year and thanking one’s ancestors and the gods for their blessing and protection. Children who have gone their hometowns return on this day to share Chinese New Year’s Eve Dinner with their families and for folks incapable to make the journey, a table setting is placed to represent their presence in spirit if not in body. Originally released almost a decade ago, The Lama’s Chants is a landmark recording that blends the serene, humble singing of Lama Gyurme with ambient synthesizer backdrops by Jean-Philippe Rykiel. Although creating a tasteful blending of Eastern and Western cultures is always a balancing act, The Lama’s Chants is a wonderful example of how moving the results can be when done correctly. Writer-director Marc Lawrence’s romantic comedy gently satirizes the music industry’s past and present via Hugh Grant’s Alex Fletcher, a has-been Rock of the ’80s icon given another shot at the charts by young pop diva Cora Corman (newcomer Haley Bennett). Grant gives some surprisingly credible–if often gently tongue-in-cheek–performances in his musical debut; indeed, he carries better than half…

AAMIR KHAN –”Making films is not purely a business; it is an art form. It is unwise to follow Lakshmi in this business:that’sthe starting point. If you follow Saraswati, then Lakshmi will follow but if you follow Lakshmi, bothwillleave.”

ADI GRANTH –”Our body in Kali Yuga is a field of action; As a man sows, so is his reward. Nothing by empty talk is determined: Anyone swallowing poison must die. Brother! Behold the Creator’s justice. As are a man’s actions, so is his recompense.”

AKHENATON –”True wisdom is less presuming than folly. The wise man doubts often, and changes his mind; the fool is obstinate and doubts not; he knows all things but his own ignorance… Be capable of change in that which is right and men will rely on you. Establish in yourself principles of action and see that you ever act according to them. First know that your principles are just and then act.”

ALEXANDER SOLZHENITSYN –”Justice is conscience, not a personal conscience but the conscience of the whole of humanity Those who clearly recognise the voice of their own conscience usually recognize also the voice of justice.”

ALFRED NORTH WHITEHEAD –”What is morality in any given time or place? It is what the majority then and there happen to like, and immorality is what they dislike.”

ALGERNON SIDNEY –”If vice and corruption prevail, liberty cannot subsist.”

AMBROSE BIERCE –”Martyr: They stood before the altar and supplied – The fire themselves in which their fat was fried.”

ANDY WARHOL –”I think having land and not ruining it is the most beautiful art that anybody could ever want to own.”

ANISH KAPOOR –”Red is a colour i’ve felt very strongly about. Maybe red is a very Indian colour, maybe it’s one of those things that i grew up with and recognise at some other level.”

ANONYMOUS –”"Corruption continues with us beyond the grave,” She said, “and then plays merry hell with all ideas.”

ANONYMOUS –”An ethical person ought to do more than he’s required to do and less than he’s allowed to do.”

ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER –”Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.”

ASTAVAKRA GITA –”The man who is pure of heart is bound to fulfil himself in whatever way he is taught. A worldly man seeks all his life, but is still bewildered. Detached from the senses; you are free. Attached, you are bound. When this is understood, you may live as you please.”

ATHARVA VEDA –”Peace be to earth and to airy spaces!/ Peace be to heaven, peace to the waters,/ Peace to the plants and peace to the trees!/ May all the gods grant me peace!/By this invocation of peace may peace be diffused!…/ Sothatpeace may prevail, happiness prevail!/ May everything for us be peaceful!”

ATHARVA VEDA –”Words can conferstrength; they can drain it off. Words can gain friends; they can turn them into enemies; Words can elevate or lower the individual. One must learn the habit of making one’s words sweet, soft and pleasant.”

B R AMBEDKAR –”Unlike a drop of water that loses its identity when ittjoins the ocean, man does not lose his being in the society in which he lives. Man’s life is independent. He is born not for the development of society alone, but for the development of the Self.”

BARRY LONG –”There is only one truth. It is being where you are. And where you are is where your body is.”

BENJAMIN CARDOZO –”The prophet and the martyr do not see the hooting throng. Their eyes are fixed on the eternities.”

BERTRAND RUSSELL –”We have, in fact, two kinds of morality side by side; one which we preach but do not practice, and another which we practice but seldom preach.”

BESS MYERSON –”The accomplice to the crime of corruption is frequently our own indifference.”

BHAGAVAD GITA –”Better indeed is knowledge than mechanical practice. Better than knowledge is meditation But better still is surrender of attachment to results, because there follows immediate peace.”

BHAGAVAD GITA –”Better indeed is knowledge than mechanical practice. Better than knowledge is meditation But better still is surrender of attachment to results, because there follows immediate peace.”

BHAGAVAD GITA –”By this attitude of complete renunciation you shall be freed from the bondage, good and bad, of Karma. You shall be liberated, and come to Me.”

BHAGAVAD GITA –”It is true that the mind is restless and difficult to control. But it can be overcome, Arjuna, through regular practice and detachment. Those who lack self-control will find it difficult to progress in meditation; but those who are self-controlled, striving earnestly through the right means, will attain the goal.”

BHAGAVAD GITA –”One who has control over the mind is tranquil in heat and cold, in pleasure and pain, in honour and dishonour; and is ever steadfast with the Supreme Self.”

BHAGAVAD GITA –”To action alone hast thou a right and never at all to its fruits; let not the fruits of action be thy motive; neither let there be in these any attachment to inaction.”

BIBLE –”Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”

BIBLE GENESIS –”While the earth remainth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.”

BODHIDHARMA –”The essence of the way is detachment.”

BYRON –”There’s music in the sighing of a reed; There’s music in the gushing of a rill; There’s music in all things, if men had ears: Their earth is but an echo of the spheres.”

CHARLES CALEB COLTON –”Corruption is like a ball of snow, once it’s set a rolling it must increase.” J

CHUCK PALAHNIUK –”If you wake up at a different time, in a different place, could you wake up as a different person?”

CICERO –”The soil of their native land is dear to all the hearts of mankind.”

CONFUCIUS –”If a gentleman has courage but neglects justice, he becomes insurgent. If an inferior man has courage but neglects justice, he becomes a thief.”

CONFUCIUS –”Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without.”

DOUG LARSON –”To err is human; to admit it, superhuman.”

ECKHART TOLLE –”Enlightenment means rising above thought, not falling back to a level below thought, the level of an animal or a plant.”

ECKHART TOLLE –”When you live in surrender, something comes through you into the world of duality that is notof thisworld.”

EDGAR WATSON HOWE –”Everyone hates a martyr; it’s no wonder martyrs were burned at the stake.”

ERNEST HEMINGWAY –”I know only that what is moral is what you feel good after land what is immoral is what you feel bad after.”

FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE –”The martyr sacrifices themselves entirely in vain. Or rather not in vain; for they make the selfish more selfish, the lazy more lazy, the narrow narrower.”

FRIEDRICH NIETZSCHE –”Morality is the best of all devices for leading mankind by the nose.”

G I GURDJIEFF –”If you help others, you will be helped, perhaps tomorrow, perhaps in one hundred years, but you will be helped. Nature must pay off the debt. It is a mathematical law and all life is mathematics.”

GABRIEL PENDAS –”Justice delayed is justice denied.”

GALILEO GALILEI –”All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.”

GAUTAMA BUDDHA –”All that we are is the result of what we have thought. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him. If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him.”

GAUTAMA BUDDHA –”For, owners of their deeds or karma are the beings, heirs of their deeds; their deeds are the womb from which they sprang; with their deeds they are bound up; their deeds are their refuge. Whatever deeds they do good or evil – of such they will be the heirs. And wherever the beings spring into existence, there their deeds will ripen; and wherever their deeds ripen, there they will earn the fruits of those deeds, be it in this life, or be it in the next life, or be it in any other future life.”

GAUTAMA BUDDHA –”Health is the greatest gift, contentment the greatest wealth, faithfulness the best relationship.. .To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.”

GAUTAMA BUDDHA –”If a man can control his mind he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him,”

GAUTAMA BUDDHA –”Teach this triple truth to all: A generous heart, kind speech and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity.”

GAUTAMA BUDDHA –”The subject on which I meditate is truth. The practice to which! devote myself is the truth. The topic of my conversation is truth. My thoughts are always in truth. Lo and behold, I have become the truth.”

GAUTAMA BUDDHA –”They are not following dharma who resort to violence to achieve their purpose. But those who lead others through non-violent means, knowing right and wrong, may be called guardians of the dharma.”

GAUTAMA BUDDHA –”To him in whom love dwells, the whole world is but one family.”

GAUTAMA BUDDHA –”Words have the power to both destroy and heal, When words are both true and kind, they can change our world.”

GAUTAMA BUDDHA –”Your work is to discover your world and then with all your heart give yourself to it.”

The senses, say the wise, are the horses; the roads they travel are the mazes of desire… When a man lacks discrimination and his mind is uncontrolled, his senses are unmanageable, like the restive horses of a charioteer. But when a man has discrimination and his mind is controlled, his senses, like the well-broken horses of a charioteer, lightly obey the rein.”

KATHA UPANISHAD –”The intellect cannot reveal the timeless Self,’ beyond all perceptions. But those know are neither body nor mind, but the immemorial Self, the Divine, beyond right and wrong, beyond cause and effect, past and future.
OSCAR WILDE –”As one reads history, one is absolutely sickened, not by the crimes that the wicked have committed, but by the punishments that the good have inflicted; and a community is infinitely more brutalised by the habitual employment of punishment than it is by the occasional occurrence of crime.”

Wat Thai of Washington D.C.

Wat Thai of Washington, D.C. is viewed as having been founded, informally, when two monks who were invited from Thailand arrived and took residence on July 5, 2517/1974, at a suburban house at 705 Wayne Avenue in Silver Spring. This house was rented by the Buddhist Association in Washington, D.C. for monks’ residence and for use as a seat of Buddhist activities of the Association.

The Buddhist Association in Washington, D.C., the owner of the house, is in turn the outgrowth of a Buddhist group which was formed in the middle of 2514/1971 to conduct Buddhist activities and to advance the cause of Buddhism. The Buddhist Association was granted a Certificate of Incorporation on November 20, 2517/1974, turning it into a legal entity under the District of Columbia Non-profit Corporation Act, thus marking its official establishment. At that time, the efforts of the Association were focused on the collection of funds for the founding of a Thai Buddhist temple or, to be precise, a residence for monks who would participate in Buddhist ceremonies and services on various religious and cultural occasions and conduct other Buddhist activities. Until the coming of the two monks in July 2517/1974, Thai Buddhists in Washington D.C. and nearby areas often resorted to the Washington Buddhist Vihara at 5017-16th Street, N.W., Washington D.C. and its incumbent Ceylonese monks for Buddhist observances, celebrations and religious services. The arrival of monks from Thailand made possible the performance of Buddhist activities fully in accordance with Thai cultural traditions. Due to the shortage of funds, however, the house, which was the first site of the so-called temple on a 8,618 square-foot plot of land, had to be rented for a long period of time.

In June 2519/1976, the Buddhist Association signed an agreement for the purchase of the house at the price of $52,500 and made a 10% deposit, turning it into the property of the Association. On July 7, 2519/1976, a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Buddhist Association was held and a resolution was passed to the effect that the name of the Temple be changed to ‘Wat Buddhamonkol’. The name has not yet come into public usage.

In 2523/1980, a larger house on a 31,000 square-foot plot of land at Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring was purchased at the price of $240,000 and the temple was moved to the new site on the seventh of December of the same year.

During the Vassa period of 2520/1977, there were two monks in residence at Wat Thai of Washington, D.C.
As the capital of the country, Washington, D.C. is the home of diplomatic officials. There are comparatively few Thai of other professions and occupations. Besides Thai diplomatic officials, those who frequent the Temple are mostly students, who, in comparison with those in other big cities, are not numerous. The Temple is quiet most of the day and on most days of the week. Its activities concentrate mainly on the observance and celebration of annual Buddhist holy days and Thai traditional holidays. The Temple also welcomes inquiries put, from time to time, by devoted lay persons and interested occasional visitors. It provides them with answers and explanations on different points of the Buddha’s teaching and on meditation both in theory and in practice. The monthly magazine of the Temple, called ‘Saeng Dhamma’, contains a variety of articles on the Dharma, most of which are in Thai, and news and information about the activities of the Temple.

In September 2519/1976, monks from Wat Thai were invited to participate in a program for oriental wives of military personnel at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. The program was set up by the chaplain there. According to him, “There are many oriental women here, mostly Thais who are married to military personnel”. Since that time, once a month, two monks from Wat Thai Washington, D.C. conduct worship services, teach and counsel at the Dover chapel. Some 50 families participate. At Homestead Air Force base in Florida, a similar program has been established for Thai wives of military personnel there and other local Thai people. However, due to the distance, the monks from Wat Thai go there more infrequently.

Buddha Statues

The statues and figurines of Buddha we see all around us are the statues of Shakyamuni Siddhartha Gautama the “Buddha” who was born in Kapilavastu, an ancient province of Nepal, as the son of king Suddhodana and Queen Maya Devi. The Queen had few auspicious dreams before the lord entered her womb from the Tushita heaven.

As Prince Siddhartha Gautama came to the age 28 he renounced the kingdom and lived the life of a mendicant. He sought and attained enlightenment in six years under a pipala tree and became a Buddha, in Bodhgaya. After enlightenment he uttered this stanza:

“Through many births I have passed the builder of the house of pain is gone and I am free from any more births”

Shakyamuni Buddha preached dharma through out his life and the light of the world had gone out and lord passed away into Nirvana at an old age of over 80.

Talking of Buddha statues & figurines, the statues of Buddha are found in a wide variety of poses, the most common of all the type is the sitting Buddha Statue in a lotus position. The posture displays inner and outer balance and tranquillity. In meditating Buddha statues the posture of the hand or the mudra, have the fingers of the right hand resting lightly on the left as they lay in the enlightened one’s lap and legs are crossed in a Lotus position. Many Buddha statues sit on a pedestal in a lotus blossom which represents the enlightened being or emptiness.

Another posture is the Abhaya mudra in which the right hand is raised and is the gesture of dispelling fear. Statues calling the earth to bear witness are represented by postures where the right hand is touching the earth below, which displays total faith. And, finally the reclining Buddha statue represents Buddha’s passage into death or Nirvana, as the disciples, angles and gods bade farewell to never returner Shakyamuni Buddha. Medicine Buddha statue symbolizes the belief that Buddha parted knowledge on medicine along with spiritual guidance.

The Mudras or postures of Hands of the Shakyamuni Buddha figures are either in abhaya (Fearlessness), Dhyana (meditation), Dharmachakra Parivartana (turning of the wheel of Dharma or doctrine or religion) and Bhumisparsa (calling the earth goddess to witness the touching of the earth by the right hand)

Buddha statues are hand made and thus they are artisan’s labour of Love, or a loving heart and moving hands giving them shapes in definite postures. The earliest representations of Buddha were mounds erected on the relics of Buddha, also known as “Stupa”. The external decorations on the stupas display the entire life of the Buddha from leaving home to enlightenment and to Mahaparinirvana.

The largest and tallest Buddha statues were found in Afghanistan which were colossal in size and have been much recently destroyed by the Taliban’s. The Statues of Buddha in Nepal are generally made out of gold, granite, bronze, copper, brass, resin, silver, ceramic, wood, etc. And, they are put on sale in a fine work of display in Thamel and Durbar Square in the ancient city of Kathmandu in Nepal or sold in various online Buddha Statues store like http://himalayacrafts.com at wholesale or retail. The standing Buddha statues with flowering robes is also common. And Buddha heads and hands are also found for sale.

All these meanings behind the Buddha statues bring forth the memories of the enlightened master who once walked upon this earth 2500 years ago. In other words they are reminiscences of the “Grand Master”.

It sometimes feels as though the Lovin’ Spoonful have been reduced to a footnote in the history of rock & roll. Yet few of their contemporaries could match the likes of “Daydream,” “Summer in the City,” and the transcendent “Do You Believe in Magic?”–a song that can still turn January into June. Legend has it that the Spoonful auditioned for The Monkees, and they’d have been good in those roles, …

Ten Ways to Condition yourself to Love Unconditionally

Even in the healthiest of relationships, opportunities abound to find fault, criticize or “tweak” the other person no matter whether we are talking about a mate, a child or a friend. Most of us were raised in an environment where rather than focusing on the positive, we were taught to zoom in and dwell on the negative. Breaking that habitual way of thinking is a matter of conditioning our minds to refocus and learn to love with abandon, without any requirements, without any rules and without any limitations.

Here is our list of top ten ways to condition yourself to love unconditionally:

10. Develop Amnesia

Forgive and forget-knock the first three letters off of both of these words and what you have is “give” and “get.” When you give forgiveness, you get so much more in return. You no longer have the burden of carrying around, remembering and reliving the ways you have been wronged, hurt, or upset. You free up your mind and your heart to receive.

The forget part of this equation does not mean that you erase the event or circumstance that caused you pain, just that you release it, and minimize it in your mind to the point that you do not dwell on it or use it as artillery every time an argument or disagreement comes up. Please note that we are not talking about abusive relationships here. Physical and emotional safety are your unconditional right, and not an option in any type of interpersonal relationship or affiliation.

9. Don’t Pick Fights; Pick Your Battles

Whether you know it or not, everyone has their own personal credo that spells out what is and what is not acceptable to them. When someone crosses that line of what is tolerable to you, it is certainly worth a discussion or two to communicate those boundaries to insure that they are not breached again. But is anything less than a hands-down, unacceptable violation of your personal credo worth arguing about? If harmony and unconditional love are your goals, the answer is “no.”

If you don’t know what your personal credo is, maybe it would be a good idea to define it for yourself. What are your fundamental beliefs about how you want to live your life? What are your irrevocable core values? What are your guiding principles? For example, someone whose personal credo includes a high degree of order and cleanliness might feel disrespected, angry and resentful when a loved one continually leaves dirty socks lying all around the house. On the other hand, if your personal credo does not have order and cleanliness as high priorities, or if those qualities are not on your list at all, you may only be frustrated or mildly irritated. So in other words, one person’s view of dirty socks is that they are an all-out affront to their personal credo and another’s might be that they are just a stinky annoyance.

The point is that you choose whether or not something is important enough to be a source of contention for you. If it truly is, then it’s time to communicate-and we are using the word “battle” in this segment to mean “take a stand,” not to wage an all out offensive-in a loving but convincing conversation. If not, let it go. Laugh it off. Try to ignore it.

It’s your credo, so you decide; you choose; but remember to pick your battles wisely, because your harmonious relationships and your own peace of mind are at stake.

Note: While this may appear to be a set of rules or restrictions that you are putting on someone in order to love them, it really is just making your values and desires known to someone who you love in order to have a happy, mutually-satisfying relationship. Negotiation and compromise are at the heart of this 9th way to condition yourself to love unconditionally.

8. Be Prepared to Switch Rather than Fight

OK, even if stinky socks are just an annoyance to you, stinky socks lying around the house are still stinky, and you may not want company in your living room wondering what that strange smell is emanating from under your couch. So you may decide that you want to express your disapproval or embarrassment with the situation. But when you do that, if you feel that things are escalating into a fight, walk away and switch your focus to a predefined list of things that make you happy and that you appreciate about your loved one. Make up your list in advance and keep it handy for whenever such a disagreement looms on the horizon. Switching to a feeling of love and appreciation is a much better place to be than focusing on a negative activity that really is not all that important to you.

7. Mistakes Are Meant To Be Made

Mistakes-everyone makes them, that’s how we learn. When we love someone, we naturally want to make them the beneficiary of our vast experience and knowledge. But if you have observed in the past that your suggestions appear to be unwanted, are met with resistance, or are falling on deaf ears belonging to your loved ones, make it a point to reserve your “help” until it is asked for. Let’s face it, constantly telling someone else what to do can be really annoying to the person on the receiving end of the advice. Now I’m not talking about holding your tongue concerning situations that could be potentially unsafe or dangerous, particularly for children. What you should look out for are sentences that start out with, “I think you should…” “It would be better if you…” Why don’t you try…” …You know what I mean. Allow your loved ones the freedom to make their own mistakes.

6. Love Means Never Having To Say You’re Sorry-NOT!

We are all human and we all use poor judgment or are insensitive to the needs or feelings of others at times. When this happens, ‘fess up; apologize; ask for forgiveness; and don’t do it again.

And when you are on the receiving end of an apology, listen attentively; graciously accept it; and then forgive and forget (See #2.).

5. See Adults As Children and Children As Adults

Often times even as adults we are living out recurring dramas that started as a result of childhood issues. For example, wanting more love and attention could have lead to an obsessive need to be noticed, resulting in an overwhelming desire to be first, to be the best, to be right at all costs. The same lack of love and attention in another child could have left him or her feeling defeated, invisible, unlovable. Recognize the wounded child in your loved ones when they make an appearance in their adult life. Acknowledge the unfulfilled need and try to help them satisfy their own wounded child self.

Children are not little adults, they are children, but they do have an inner, older, wiser soul. Do not put off their opinions, observations or questions as silly or childish. Show them the love and respect for their words and actions that they deserve at all ages and stages of their lives.

4. WYSIWYG

“What you see is what you get” is a very important distinction in giving unconditional love. It’s all about what you are focusing on in the relationship, because what you focus on is that you get. If you are only looking at the things that make you want to criticize and find fault, you will get more and more of those kinds of things to criticize and find fault with. Concentrate on the positive aspects of your loved ones and that is what you will see more and more of.

3. Affirm Away Negativity

Sweep away any negative thoughts that you may have about your relationships and replace them with positive affirmations that express exactly how you would like the relationships to be. Affirmations are tiny sound bites that are transmitted directly to your subconscious mind, where their creation begins. Think or say your affirmations out loud with emotion for the best results. Also, make sure that you create them in the present tense as if they are already happening. Here are some examples: “I love and respect my mate and my mate loves and respects me.” “My children are a constant source of love and joy in my life.” “I lovingly and effectively communicate my wants and desires.”

2. Don’t Be An Energy Hog

Did you know that you can actually “steal” energy from someone else? Along with our physical body that we can see, we also have an energy field surrounding the full length of our body and extending out as far as our outstretched arms. This energy network is an expression of our personal power. Power struggles ensue when we attempt to control or manipulate someone else and the “loser” can actually lose some of their power to another. (Haven’t you ever felt “drained” after being in an argument or a confrontation with someone?) Let go of your need to control or dominate someone else or, conversely, of your incessant need to cling to your loved ones. These are both energy-robbing activities. A feeling of powerlessness activates the need to take power from others, even-and maybe especially-our loved ones. Keep this in mind as you go on to #1.

1. It Takes One to Know One

“If you aren’t good at loving yourself, you will have a difficult time loving anyone, since you’ll resent the time and energy you give another person that you aren’t even giving to yourself.”
- Barbara de Angelis

Until you love yourself unconditionally, you cannot unconditionally love someone else. Period. Love and respect yourself just the way you are…now. Not in the future, not whenever you achieve whatever… now. Your power and capacity to love lie in the present moment and it starts with loving yourself. We are all spiritual beings living in a physical dimension. Invite the spiritual part of you to join the physical part of you as you experience your life. See your world through the eyes of spirit and you will recognize the truth of it. Everything is perfect as it is right now. You are perfect as you are right now. Embracing your perfection will condition your heart to love and accept others as they are, too.

Buddha Said, “You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.” Truly hear these words in your soul and you’ll see the results in your heart. Your happiness will not depend on your loved ones acting in a certain way; your happiness will depend on you!
