A feminine Oriental inspired spring and summer!

To get the right look this Spring and summer it’s important to get the clothes moving and being voluminous with different layers of fabrics, flounces and ruffles. Like the amazing Ermanno Scervino collection. Combined with semi transparent clothes it gives you the perfect romantic look. To hit the spot though it’s important as well to mix up the romantic look with floral prints inspired by the remote hippie culture. In fact this year the international catwalks were full of dresses with floral prints, girly butterflies painted with watercolors mixed with other colorful fabric prints. Like the Versace collection or even the Moschino collection Cheap and chic.

An other trend this new coming season is the tribal/oriental inspired style. With long dresses, python prints, kaftans, animal prints and African inspired accessories. The Roberto Cavalli collection have made some very exotic and tribal inspired kaftans with animal prints. A Must Have this spring and summer is in fact the exotic kaftans! The kaftans are available in different sizes, shapes and colors. That’s one reason why it’s extremely comfortable, the other is that it works great both day and night time! On the beach as well at the club with particular accessories and the right shoes! Gucci though have made some more elegant kaftans, in clear shining blue, red, ocean green and purple.

Purple is still trendy in fact this spring and summer it’s still top fashion. Designers this year have combined different shades of purple together as lilac, violet, plum and lavender. But also purple together with other strong colors. Yellow for instant which also is on the top this spring and summer! To continue with the strong colors which are definitely very trendy this spring and summer, all fluorescent colors are absolutely right. Like strong orange, florescent clear blue, yellow and green in different shades.

Different themes are popular as well, like the safari or marine theme. The classic safari jacket is perfect on mild spring afternoons. Put together with creamy colors, light blue jeans and some feminine accessories. The Dolce & Gabbana collection this year clearly demonstrate the marine theme, with red and blue and white and blue stripped shirts, as well as bathing suites. With sometimes even anchors printed on the chest to amplify the marine touch. Waist high trousers and funny bathing hats!

For summer nights it’s silk and satin with a metallic touch that rules! Long or short dresses made in this beautiful and elegant material could never be wrong but this spring and summer it’s more right than ever! Also these combined with sheer (see-trough fabrics) and unique decorations. A beautiful voluminous purple silk dress with big gold or silver accessories and high healed platform sandals could never fail this summer and spring!

Talking about high healed sandals the new expressive shoe fashion must be nominated. With its sky high healed shoes, gladiator sandals, thick platform sandals and thousand details. Like the crazy but obviously amazing collection Guiseppe Zanotti Design or Paciotti.

Are Yellow Labs mean dogs.?

Many people say that Yellow Labs (and all Labs for the matter) are very calm, friendly, and family-oriented. However i dont think they are. Mostly for because both my dog and my grandmothers were attacked by Yellow Labs (two seperate dogs). My dog was almost gutted and had to have 9 inches of intestine removed and my grandmothers had to have plenty of stitches. Ever since my grandmothers dog got mauled she has hated the breed, and I have to say I get sort of uncomferatble around them as well. Does anyone agree that Yellow Labs can be very mean dogs?

It’s hard to generalize-there’s always going to be exceptions. As a whole, yellow labs are genial, but specific ones may be prone to violence. Just like any other breed of dog.

Development Economics

shrinks people to bonsai size

Wendell W. Solomons

Though cultivated as a bonsai miniature, a little flowering tree must sprout blossoms. An azalea or frangipane tree when grown as a bonsai needs nutrition, water and sunshine but less than a tree of normal growth. To make a bonsai, a sapling tree has its little branches clipped. Yet, the greatest effect in shrinking is achieved below the surface by using a shallow pot or tray that will restrain the growth of roots.

Grow more food experience also retained low productivity in agriculture

Can people be shrunk like bonsai?

Plato (c. 428-c. 347 BC) served Greece as a political philosopher. In his work ‘The Republic’ he presented a theoretical development of a perfect city. He exclaims in the latter work, “Oh, for a beautiful myth that everyone would believe!”

Plato was aware that myths could affirm or shrink nations.

Myths are created massively in modernity. For instance, we are accustomed to commercial superlatives generated in advertising. Notably for this account, it was an ad copywriter out in Chicago, Edgar Rice Burroughs, who was contracted by publishers to create stories to mythologise for children, through pictures of Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle – born Lord Greystrokes – an Anglo-Saxon supremacy in the world.

Intensify

In the 19th century, psychologists, writers and statesmen came to intensify myth-generation for behaviour adjustment. The generating of myths was to accelerate rapidly in the 20th century with the World Wars. We know Nazi leaders, for instance, created a myth of Jews as the ‘Evil Other’. The purpose of this myth was to make a powerful nationalist, military machine by mustering German citizens around the Nazis.

One of the responses to the Nazi war machine on the British side was a mustering by PM Winston Churchill of his own countrymen. He declared:

“So let us brace ourselves and do our duty. So bear ourselves that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say: ‘THIS was their finest hour.”

With its Commonwealth, Britain was the largest empire the world has seen. The Churchills were informed, dynastic courtiers but does the allusion to ‘a thousand years’ appear mythical to you?

During the war, PM Winston Churchill cruised out to sea claiming with aplomb for media – a fishing trip. In mid-Atlantic and not on British shores Churchill signed a charter on August 14, 1941 with President Franklin D. Roosevelt. PM Churchill agreed Britain would liberate colonies (Churchill did this to add US aid to his war chest). Later, to Britain as a nation, Churchill left the fulfilling of obligations under the Atlantic Charter with the grant of Independence in 1947 to India, after which followed Burma, Ceylon and other colonies. Churchill’s “thousand years” ended formally in less than a decade.

However, if not under a formal name, might the Churchill-reasoned “thousand years” persist?

At the end of World War II, a large number of disciplines became available to study and to adjust human behaviour.

These disciplines include anthropology, management, marketing and advertising, political science, educational psychology, general psychology and social psychology.

Could these disciplines be applied in all or in chosen countries?

We might observe that after Independence, a remarkable division of countries ensued. Previously, children were just born in the world.

In the post-Independence period they might be born in a “Third World.” This turned out to be a label for those nations that were specially cordoned off to be shrunk to bonsai proportion.

During the 20th century, the financial city of London was activating its affiliates in New York such as the Schiffs and Warburgs to buy holdings, capitalise and influence US policy. American and British country shareholdings alone would guarantee finance capital a voice in the World Bank and IMF. Perhaps the shareholdings might support a “thousand years” of profit for finance capital houses, successors to the pawn trade against which the Buddha spoke in the times of the Silk Route? We must not underestimate the Churchills for grasp of ancient and contemporary history. They were schooled, elite intimates rendered dynastic through Arabella Churchill, 1648-1730, the mistress of King James II of England and the mother of at least three of his children.

Peasant agriculture

Soon after Independence, the World Bank and the IMF were used for Trojan horse attacks on new statesmen of emergent countries. This was originally planned for Germany in 1945 by US official Henry Morgenthau Jr. After the war Morgenthau had proposed dividing Germany into a handful of de-industrialised, agrarian states. However, that had to be set aside in 1947 for the Marshall Plan to industrialise Germany because neighbouring Eastern Europe was seen taking off faster.

Elite statesmen used Morgenthau in Asia for a three-way split of India. These elites traditionally bank on a capacity to reign in countries by activating bigots, fundamentalists and war-mongers.

In the case of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) colonisation had lasted almost half a millennium and had repressed its school for statesmen; this in a nation where written chronicles reach 200 BC. Finance capital, through its fronts (a key architect of the World Bank and the IMF was the same Morgenthau) browbeat the nation’s new leaders into the original plan for Germany: Invest resources in extending agriculture. In 1952 experts of the World Bank wrote up this fable in hundreds of pages and so the report had to emerge in hard cover. Following this behaviour-adjustment attack, country Treasury’s reserves were invested in bulldozing virgin hardwood forests and making allotment of 5-acre plots of land. In these farmsteads, wooden ploughs of an era not too distant from the Silk Route were to be used.

So, a frontier of mind instilled in the 1950s by Western experts in many post-colonial countries was opt for agriculture instead of industry.

In Sri Lanka in May 1995, Mahathir Mohamed expressed an opinion in speaking on “Beyond Existing Frontiers,” a related theme. He explained that one acre of land would support one farmer but if the country made a choice of manufacturing industry, the same acre of land would support 500 workers.

Industry

Worldwide, the 20th century had seen farm mechanisation continue to release people from agriculture and Dr. Mahathir Mohamed noted that those countries that managed to develop successfully in modern Asia had relied on manufacturing industry to employ the working hands released by agriculture.

So 50 years of the experiment “Grow More Food” retained low productivity and therefore Sri Lanka remains a food grain importer. Though the tropical country has grasslands unaffected by winter, it also imports milk products from colder zones.

During the half century, people released from agriculture swelled the ranks of the unemployed and many veered towards liberationism. Why was this fable for investment in low productivity agriculture ingrained in poor countries? Wasn’t it finance capital using spin doctors to protect for a “thousand years” the Western industries that it owned through mammoth holding companies?

Time saw this finance capital tactic lay waste many a small country in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Yet, through industrial growth seen for instance in China and India, the agriculture myth is being rolled into history’s attic.

Forex Secrets. Delusion No1. Forex Currency Rate and Economic Factors Impact on Exchange Rate

The delusion conceptually propounds that intraweek and intraday FOREX currency quotes movement is governed by either improvement or by deterioration of the state’s economic situation. But in reality, even in case the actual Forex news are superior to the estimated one, the FOREX quotes up/down movement is of 50/50 probability.

This statement is thoroughly important. Once the job of Forex trader is gambling on FOREX exchange rates differential (FOREX pairs up/down movement), the following is to be realized to obtain faultless profit:

FOREX pairs pricing mechanism (say at point X where you are completing the market analysis)

Factors imparting growth/decline to FOREX rates (up/down from point X).

Thus, having understood the FOREX ratesfactors effective at the extra-exchange (book-maker) FOREX market and the given currency motive factors, a trader must possess distinct knowledge of whether to buy or to sell the given currency pair.

So, what are these factors?

FOREX student suggest unambiguous interpretation of factors responsible for the price formation and the fluctuations there of:

Forex rate constitutes a demand-supply balance for a given goods (currency).

Any violation of this balance, (for instance, in case where the estimated news is in disagreement with the issued official one), results in the FOREX rates reciprocation in chase of a new demand-supply balance. Poor demand brings about decline in a certain currency rate, with a high demand leading to the growth of the latter. The situation continues as long as the currency buy/sell demand comes to balance at another level or at another point.

Referring to the B. Williams (“Trading Chaos 2” Chapter 1 “The market is what you are thinking of it”):

Each world market is dedicated to distribute or share limited amount of something… among those desirous to obtain it most of all. The market affects it by way of finding out and identifying the exact price? Underlying the buyer’/sellers’ power absolute equilibrium point.

The above point is readily established by stock, futures, bonds, FOREX and options markets, be it either via an open auction or by virtue of a computerized facility. Markets spot this point prior to any misbalance being detectable by You or by me or even by traders at the exchange floor.

With this scenario holding true – and it really does – we are in position to jump at certain simple yet important conclusions as regards the information being circulated through the market and enjoying doubtless acceptance”.

Thomas Demark was more laconic in “Technical analysis – an emerging science”:

“Price movement is governed by demand and supply. Should demand exceed supply, there’s a price rally and if visa versa, there’s a price decline. All economists do share these underlying principles”.

Hence, the role of fundamental analysis for FOREX market is readily apparent.

In scholar fiction one will discover roughly the following explanation, persistently wandering from book to book, from site to site and suggesting attaining successful trading at FOREX market by way of scrutinizing the country’s economic fundamental data, viz. by tracking the factors reflective of the country’s economy condition as below:

State economy condition dynamics indicators (GDP, trade & payments balance, current account, industrial production, etc. It is knowledge, that the higher the above indicators – the faster the economic and the currency price growth);

Stock indices, via average arithmetic index of the country’s securities market condition and dynamics. E.g.: 0.3% daily DJI growth in the USA means that this certain day the shares of 30 leading US companies, being pictured by DJU, went 0.3% more expensive. By similarity, DAX30 is the major German index, incorporating the price of shares of the country’s 30 leading companies.

The country’s interest rate, since the higher the rate, the greater number of investors is eager to invest into the country’s economy and hence into national currency strength.

Rate of inflation (the higher the rate, the quicker the National Bank will hike the interest rate). With this assumption, the CPI constitutes a key factor.

Money supply growth in domestic market, which fact brings about the inflation, leading to the interest rate hike.

The country’s gold and currency reserve assets.

Variation dynamics correlation of: balances of payment, trade balance, state budget, gross domestic product (GDP), etc.

Trade and industry dynamics (industrial production, industrial orders, DGO, capacity utilization, retail sales, etc.)

Construction statistics (construction spending, new home sales, housing under construction, building permits, etc.)

Labor statistics (unemployment rate, new jobs, etc.)

Society investigations (consumer confidence, consumer sentiment, purchase managers and service managers sentiment, etc.)

To be considered additionally are the country’s political stability and tranquility (clearly, any political, natural and other cataclysms are sure to turn investors nervous making them withdraw the investments from the country, thus weakening its national currency). And with the currency being the national economy derivative, changes in economic data will inevitably result in the above currency rate movement.

Conclusions:

Progress in economy results in the currency exchange rate rally.

Decrease in economic indicators leads to the national currency rate decline.

To sum it up, critical economic and political news (whose calendar is issued in advance and is familiar to any trader) constitute a standing factor giving rise to misbalance and causing the currency rate fluctuations.

In anticipation of important economic and political news FOREX pair crawl to the rates as inspired by the estimates (“rumored trade”), whereas upon actual news there occurs a pulse motion of FOREX pairs in accordance with the scheme below;

Forex rate grows if actual news are better than the estimated one;

Forex rate declines if actual news are worse than the estimated one.

ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH THESE ABC BASICS OF STUDYING FOREX?

Do you accept that one can earn money by way of using these basics, known to every trader?

Then why, having absorbed these economic axioms, 90% of Forex traders in the world are losers rather than winners.

Where is the delusion of the above ABC truth, nudging traders towards losses? Let us perform sort of point-by-point analysis.

The currency exchange FOREX market is a book-makers one. It is gambling on rates difference without direct money delivery to the exchange market, except for hedging of traders’ funds by Forex brokers, via buy-sell difference especially during strong trends). Then, www.forexite.com reads: “Trading is performed without actual currencies supply, which fact cuts overheads and enables Forexite to go long and short on the currency” http://www.forexite.com/forexite_advantages/forex_advantages.html.

Comment: Have you ever met any book-makers;

o whose logics was coincident with that of THEIR clients (traders),

o whose stakes were being made in accordance with THEIR technical analysts forecasts, economic laws and common sense?

And what extent of doubt and skepticism should be attached to THEIR free “recommendations”, “advice”, “surveys” and “forecasts”, laid out at THEIR sites through THEIR analysts?

As a regular result, over 90% of the world traders are still loosing their deposits at FOREX each time they follow Thomas Demark stereotype that “All the economists share these underlying principles”.

Comment No.1. In as much as the above underlying principles are 90% contradictory to practice, it gives rise to the following question. Might these “underlying principles, shared by all economists including Thomas Demark” have possibly turned into dogma, alien to life and practice?

Comment No.2. What should a trader lean on: practice or dogma even if supported by great names, provided that the trader is purported at earning money?

FOREX analysts issuing their daily bulky market reviews are not FOREX traders in the overwhelming majority (see detailed discussion below). And on bringing together pairs 1, 2 and 3 there appears certain regularity.

Please, think over A. Elder words, that: “FOREX rates and the fundamental analysis are tied together with a mile-long rope. The fundamental analysis is ultimately decisive. But anything is likely to happen prior to this eventuality”. See http://forum.alpari-idc.ru/viewtopic.php?p=233365&sid=a15db5e24b0eec0a8cf725e2c5cac859).

Another, yet no less renowned trader and analyst, Bill Williams underlines the same mental regularity of an experienced professional trader (level 3 of his trader’s skill rating as per “Trading Chaos 2”): “On attaining level 3 you emerge as a self-provided pro trader. You are always familiar with the market’s basic, usually invisible structure. You no longer need to refer to others’ opinions. You needn’t read “Wall Street Journal”, watch market-oriented TV programs, and subscribe to information bulletins, waste money on information channels”.

Comment: Logically, there is a counter-implication, that if You are eager to become a successful trader, You are to restrict the influence of various surveys and recommendations on yourself even in case they originate from the world famous “Wall Street Journal”, to say nothing of crude gurus in analyst skins who use to know ahead of time where currencies will go.

Forex news is a scheduled issue of fundamental data, which as a rule impairs FOREX rates a sharp pulse of motion. But then, why the currency rates movement vector is only 50% coincident with the ABC truism logics as to where the rate should rush in case of actual news being much better or worse than the estimate. And, please, make an attempt to answer the following question, stirring for every trader: why with the new being worse than expected (say, on US economy), the USD currency would initially fall by 40 pips (news work-off) but in 5 to 10 minutes it would swivel back and would display a 200-point rally, with no account to either the issued news or to common sense.

Below are some examples:

Fig. 1. GBPUSD chart as of April 1, 2005 after the news, positive for the GBP and negative for the US economy.

(Picture you can see on author site )

In March the CIPS manufacturing index amounted to 52.0 (with the previous data revised from 51.8 to 51.6). Oil price in NYC has grown by USD 2.40 up to USD57.70 per bbl (new record of the latest 21 years). Non-farm payrolls in the USA was minimum since last July (previous data revised towards lower values). There has been a decline in the Michigan sentiment index to 92.6 (median estimate was 92.9, with 92.9 previously).

All the US indices faced a fall down. DJI at NYSE has fallen by 99.46 pips (-0.95%) towards closing at 10404.30. NASDAQ declined by 14.42 pips (-0.72%) to 1984.81. S&P500 slipped by 7.67 pips (-0.65%) to 1172.92. 30-yr US Bonds yielded 4.729 (0.037 lower as compared to the previous close). By contrary, FTSE100 has grown by 19.60 pips (+0.40%) to 4914.00.

Now, the question is to certified economists: what will happen to the GBPUSD within one day or even several hours upon publication of these data? You are right, USD should not simply fall down, it should collapse. Powerfully, swiftly. Well, well…

And this time, the same question to experienced traders. By FOREX news headlines You might have guessed that the events are taking place at the Friday American session. Correct. Initially, anyway, the GBPUSD chart will go up by 100 pips (news wok-off), followed by a pullback. Then Forex chart starts a new rally.

It is now to be tracked whether the GBP will breach the latest rally high or not. If affirmative, it will rush up by approximately 160 pips (Elliott wave 1 was 100 pips, while EW 3 is 60% longer). But if the high is not breached? The GBP currency quote will in no way come to a standstill, moreover on Friday afternoon. Hence, – down, to the starting point! And, if breached, similar situation takes shape but the counting is performed in a “down” direction (EW1, being the same 100 pips plus 187 pips from 1.8826 to 1.8759 being EW 3).

The FOREX day trading tactics will be given scrutiny in a separate chapter. A still separate chapter will be dedicated to Friday trade at American session due to its inherent specifics and to strong seemingly inappropriate movement. The movement is, of course, appropriate. To say nothing of Friday. But it will be touched upon later.

Now, getting back to the currency chart. As apparent, the GBPUSD pair movement on Friday, April, 01, 2005 is in no way in conjunction with the US economy fundamental data. Each forex trader can provide from tens to hundreds of similar instances, where the news are of a certain vector, whereas, after a fraudulent rush along the news vector, a currency applies reverse thrust.

Thereafter, the next day, in daily currency surveys, certified economists are sure to explain all to us by way of inventing another undisguised nonsense, like: “in spite of certain data, traders decided that the currency has already worked-off this side”. But! How could this occur on Apr, 01, 2005, provided that the currency has been staying flat in a narrow range in the course of the whole of the European session?

Otherwise, another explanation may emerge, that forex traders were expecting still more inferior news on the US economy… But! By how much more inferior, if according to DJ, the US non-farm payrolls MA was equivalent to 180K, with actual being +110K, estimate being +225K and prior being +243K? And in what manner do these economists count up world traders: by capita, by countries or by the funds, lost by those, who continued staying long in a holy belief in renowned academic scholars postulate of FOREX rates being tied up to countries’ economy statistics.

I wonder if I’ll ever chance to witness legal procedures to be instituted against any of those famous scholars, so that no one would dare claim that fundamental data trigger rate spikes.

The same pertains to economists, writing about the way, hundreds of thousands traders throughout the globe have conspired to conclude that it is time to reverse the trends with absolutely no grounds. Is it really feasible?

Such reading-matter is, but hammering a single question into one’s head: is it lie or is it stupidity of those cooking daily reports for taking traders for a ride, fooling them up and keeping them from the truth, which might be of great avail to them in daily trading. Traders are not a decisive factor, thus rates movement is in no way dependent on their will. Practically in no way.

Wanna check? Negotiate with tens of traders of the trading floor and arrange for a simultaneous entry long on some exotic FOREX pair. In so doing, try to push up either the NZDHKD, or the NZDCAD, or the HKDCAD. No need? I think so. You’ll certainly suffer failure with the above, to say nothing of the EUR, GBP, CHF.

Another example:

Fig.2. GBPUSD movement as of May 13, 2005.

(Picture you can see on author site )

This is an M15 chart of the American session, where the USD pair has grown by over 100 pips from 1.8583 to 1.8481 against the news, negative for the US economy:

Most indices have dropped down: DJI at NYSE – by 49.36 pips (-0.48%) to close at 10140.12; S&P500 – by 5.31 pips (-0.46%) to 1154.05. NASDAQ has grown by 12.92 pips (+0.66%) to1976.80. 30yr US Bonds yielded 4.484 (0.047 drop from previous close)

There is a fall in Michigan sentiment index. In May UMich was 85.3 with med est 90.0 and prior 87.7. So it was worse than the estimate, reaching the low since March, 2003. The index decline was being observed for the fifth month.

The April US export price index was +0.6% with prior of +0.7%.

Below are other similar examples of that same day.

Fig. 3. EURUSD chart as of May 13, 2005.

(Picture you can see on author site )

Hundreds of examples may be offered, where the Forex news vector is opposite to that of the currency movement. Practically, actual news may happen to be superior or inferior to the estimate. FOREX quotes up/down movement is also of 50/50 probability irrespective of the above.

Why does it happen and what is the way for a trader to pinpoint entries and exits? This is going to be discussed in ensuing chapters of this book and in the Masterforex-V Trading Academy proceedings.

My little brother’s high school principal has started to give detention (and possible suspension) to students who do not participate in “school spirit oriented activities.” (pep rallies, senior spirit week, etc). Can he legally do that? It is a public school in NJ.
Just to clarify… Senior spirit week consists of dressing up in costumes Mon-Fri with a different theme for each day. When I was in high school, many students did not participate in this activity, but still attended school. Also, some students were also allowed to go to study hall instead of attending pep rallies. Again, you are in school, but deciding not to participate for whatever reason. I am wondering if any form of punishment is legal for not wearing a costume or not attending a school function.

Oh, geez. That is ridiculous and i’ve never heard of it until now.

I don’t think it’s legal. However, if these pep rallies are taking place during school hours and they are assemblies (entire school attends), you most likely have to attend. I know I had to, even though I didn’t like it, and certainly had no school spirit.

Your little brother will have to attend if it’s during school (unless he’s ill and absent), but there’s no reason to be punished for having no spirit.

I’m planning on proposing in St. Martin during a vacation in the near future, but don’t know much about the island (besides what I’ve picked up from some light reading). Any recommendations on places to propose – on a particular beach or restaurant or someplace else?? We’re staying in the Orient Bay area on the French side. Thanks!

We’ve been there several times, and we think the best place would be a restaurant called Le Sentel, it’s on the French side. It is a FABULOUS five star dining experience, they have tables that are set over the water. Definitely one of the most, if not the most romantic settings on the island. I will warn you, it is not cheap, but certainly well worth the price. The food is incredible, and the service is impeccable. Hope that helps !!! Good Luck !!!

History

Giraffes in front of Sydney’s skyline.

Rustic Bridge in 2009.

The first public zoo in New South Wales opened in 1884 at Billy Goat Swamp in Moore Park, on a site now occupied by Sydney Boys High School and Sydney Girls High School. Inspired by a 1908 visit to the Hamburg Zoo, the secretary of the zoo, Albert Sherbourne Le Souef, envisioned a new zoo based on the bar-less concept. After realising that the Moore Park site was too small, the NSW Government granted 43 acres (17 ha) of land north of Sydney Harbour. A further 9 acres (3.6 ha) were later granted in 1916.

Taronga is an Aboriginal word meaning beautiful view.

Rustic Bridge

The “Rustic Bridge” was opened in 1915 and was one of Taronga Zoo’s earliest landscape features. It was the main way in which visitors could cross the natural gully that it spans. Early photographs show it as a romantic pathway secluded by plantings. The rustic effect was created by embedding stones in the wall and like the Aquarium, its design was reminiscent of Italian grottoes. A tunnel under the bridge that originally connected the Upper and Lower Aquariums has long been blocked at both ends and is also very popular.

Later additions and changes

A critical review in 1967 led to a new emphasis on scientific conservation, education and preservation. New exhibits were built starting with the Platypus and Nocturnal Houses, waterfowl ponds and walkthrough Rainforest Aviary. A Veterinary Quarantine Centre was built as was an Education Centre (funded by the Department of Education). Previous attractions such as elephant rides, miniature trains, monkey circus and merry-go-round gave way to educational facilities such as Friendship Farm and Seal theatre.

In the mid-1980s, a cable car was installed that allows visitors to view the zoo and Sydney Harbour. It runs from the bottom of the park close to the ferry wharf, and transports passengers to the top end of the zoo.

2000 Masterplan

In 2000, TCSA commenced a 12-year $69 million master plan, the majority of which is being spent at Taronga Zoo. The first major master plan item was the Backyard to Bush precinct. Under the plan, the Zoo received five Asian elephants from the Thailand Zoological Park Organisation for breeding purposes, education, long-term research and involvement of conservation programs. The plan has met opposition from environmental activists in Thailand, who blockaded the trucks hauling the elephants to Bangkok International Airport for their flight on June 5, 2006. The elephants along with other Asian rain forest specimens are housed in the “Wild Asia” precinct which opened in 2006 and aims to immerse visitors in an Asian rain forest environment.

A marine section, Great Southern Oceans, opened in April 2008.

Zoo Friends

Zoo Friends offers support in form of volunteers and fund raising for both Taronga and Western Plains Zoo. Members are offered behind-the-scenes experiences at the Zoo and unlimited Zoo entry. Members are also eligible to volunteer to help at the Zoo.

Notable Events

Platypus Birth

In February, 2003 it became the second zoo in Australia to breed the platypus.

Elephant Birth

Luk Chai at five months old.

At 3.04am on July 4th 2009 Thong Dee, an Asian Elephant gave birth to a male calf named Luk Chai. It is the first calf ever born in Australia. Thong Dee is one of the 8 Elephants imported into Australia to participate in the Australasian Conservation Breeding Program. Taronga is expecting a further two calves to be born in the next two years. The baby elephant is a major tourist attraction, with thousands of visitors attending the zoo just to see him.

Transport

The Taronga Zoo ferry services are, for many tourists, the preferred mode of travel to the zoo.[citation needed] Passengers disembarking at the ferry wharf, located on Bradleys Head Road, can enter the zoo via a cable car or connect with local State Transit bus services. Sydney Ferries offers combined “ZooLink” tickets covering ferry fares, park entry and cable car ride.
