As bocoo man answered… most scanners will do the job, but the average price is $250.00 for a good flatbed scanner.

Check out this website, they charge $0.24 per slide. Not too bad. http://scancafe.com/index_adwords1.php?gclid=CNjqyuG1mIgCFREDGAodTx6TNA

Game Of Death

Original plot

The original plot involved Lee playing the role of Hai Tien, a retired champion martial artist who was confronted by the Korean underworld gangs. They tell him the story of a pagoda where guns are prohibited, and under heavy guard by highly skilled martial artists who are protecting something (which is not identified at all in any surviving material) held on its top level. The gang boss wants Hai to be a part of a group whose purpose is to retrieve said item. They would be the second group to try to do so as the first attempt with a previous group had failed. When Hai refuses, his younger sister and brother are kidnapped, forcing him to participate. Hai, as well as four other martial artists (two of which were played by James Tien and Chieh Yuan), then fight their way up a five-level pagoda, encountering a different challenge on each floor. The setting of the pagoda was at Beopjusa temple in Songnisan National Park in South Korea.

The pagoda, called Palsang-jon, is the only remaining wooden pagoda in South Korea. At the base of the pagoda they fight 50 people all black belts in martial arts, while inside the pagoda, they encounter a different opponent on each floor, each more challenging than the last. Although his allies try to help out, they are handily defeated, and Hai must face each of the martial artists in one-on-one combat. He defeats Filipino martial arts master Dan Inosanto, hapkido master Ji Han Jae, and finally Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who fights with a free and fluid style mirroring Lee’s Jeet Kune Do. Because Kareem’s character has great size and strength in addition to a fighting style as potent as Lee’s, he can only be defeated once Hai recognizes that an unusually high sensitivity to light is his greatest weakness.

Immediately after defeating the giant guardian, Hai turns around and descends the staircase, heading out the pagoda. Despite all the talk of something awaiting up top of the (now unguarded) flight of stairs, there’s no mention of anyone going up to retrieve it. No surviving material explains how this will affect Hai or his captive siblings.

Original production

Although the pagoda was supposed to have five floors, complete scenes were only shot for three of the floors: the “Palace of the Tiger,” where Lee faced Inosanto; the “Palace of the Dragon”, where he fought Ji Han Jae; and the final floor, where he fought Abdul-Jabbar. Hapkido master Ing-Sik Whang was slated to play the guardian of the first floor, a master of a kick-oriented style, while Bruce’s longtime student and good friend Taky Kimura was asked to play the guardian of the second floor, a stylist of praying mantis kung fu.

The goal of the film’s plot was to showcase Lee’s beliefs regarding the principles of martial arts. As each martial artist is defeated (including Lee’s allies), the flaws in their fighting style are revealed. Some, like Dan Inosanto’s character, rely too much on fixed patterns of offensive and defensive techniques, while others lack economy of motion. Lee defeats his opponents by having a fighting style that involves fluid movement, unpredictability, and an eclectic blend of techniques. His dialogue often includes references on their weaknesses.

Bruce Lee: A Warrior’s Journey

Several years later, Bruce Lee historian John Little released Bruce Lee: A Warrior’s Journey, a documentary revealing the original footage and storyline of The Game of Death. The documentary also includes a fairly in-depth biography of Lee and leads into the filming of The Game of Death. Fans still believe there is more footage to be found. Originally meant to be a documentary in its own right, now it can be found on the second disc of the 2004 Special Edition DVD release of Enter the Dragon, along with the documentary Bruce Lee: Curse of the Dragon.

Bruce Lee in G.O.D.: Shibteki Ygi

In 2000, the Japanese film Bruce Lee in G.O.D. was released on DVD. This film shows Lee’s original vision of the film through the existing footage that was shot for the film before he died, interviews, and historical reenactments of what went on behind the scenes. A “special edition” DVD was released in 2003.

The 1978 version uses portions of the original footage married to an entirely new plot involving a new Jan Spears’ character, Billy Lo, struggling against a racketeering “syndicate” after gaining international success as a martial arts movie star. When Billy refuses to be intimidated by syndicate henchman Steiner (Hugh O’Brian) and his gangs of thugs, syndicate owner Dr. Land (Dean Jagger) orders his assassination to serve as an example to others.

Disguised as a stuntman, Land’s assassin Stick (Mel Novak) sneaks onto the set of Billy’s new film, and shoots Billy during filming. A fragment of the bullet passes through Billy’s face, leaving him alive but in need of plastic surgery which alters his facial features. Billy takes the opportunity to fake his death and disguise himself, exacting revenge against those who wronged him one at a time. When the syndicate threatens and kidnaps his fiancee, Ann Morris (Colleen Camp), Billy is forced to come out of hiding in order to save her. In the revised film, Bruce Lee’s fight scenes inside the pagoda are assumed to take place in the upper floors of the Red Pepper restaurant, where Dr. Land and his thugs have laid an ambush.

Production

The revised version of the film uses only 11 minutes and 7 seconds of the footage from the original The Game of Death, and for the vast majority of the film, the role of Billy Lo was shared by Yuen Biao, taekwondo master Kim Tai Chung, and Chen Yao Po and was voiced by Chris Kent. The plot of the film allowed Kim and Yuen to spend much of the film in disguises, usually involving false beards and large, dark sunglasses, that obscured the fact that they bore little resemblance to Lee. Many scenes, including fight scenes, also included brief close-up bits of stock footage of the real Bruce Lee from his pre-Enter the Dragon films, often only lasting a second or two. These clips are easily recognizable due to the difference in film quality between the old and new footage.

Several actors associated with previous Lee movies were included in the re-shoot for the final 1978 film. For example, Robert Wall, a villain in both Way of the Dragon and Enter the Dragon, plays a kickboxer named Carl Miller who must battle with Billy Lo. Sammo Hung, who appeared in Enter the Dragon, served as the fight coordinator for the re-shoot of Game of Death, and also appears in the scene as a ring opponent for Miller. In order to maintain continuity with the fight footage taken from the original film, Dan Inosanto (renamed Pasqual) and Ji Han Jae (whose character was unnamed and was not shown until near the end of the film) were given small parts as additional enforcers for the syndicate. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar refused to participate in the re-shoot, with another tall African-American stand-in (renamed Hakim) included instead. Although Chuck Norris is credited as starring in the movie, his role is limited to clips from Way of the Dragon inserted into the film.

The film quality of the Clouse-directed footage was noticeably higher than that of Lee’s earlier Hong Kong films, and John Barry provided an original soundtrack. The film also featured performances by experienced actors as well as up-and-coming stars, including two recipients of the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor (Dean Jagger and Gig Young) and several who have been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, including Dean Jagger, Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, Hugh O’Brian, and Gig Young.

In Hong Kong, the film was dubbed into Cantonese, and had significant changes, such as the inclusion of a fight in a green house with Casanova Wong and a different opening and closing credits sequence, featuring a new theme song, plus a couple of minor scenes. Several scenes were removed, also, including the fight in the opera house dressing room. All of the extra footage used in the Hong Kong version was included on Hong Kong Legends’ 2-disc DVD release of the film.

Reception

The movie was successful[citation needed] at the box office but was not well received. Criticism of the revised version included the inclusion of scenes that could be considered in bad taste, such as the incorporation of footage of Lee’s actual funeral. Another scene, often pointed out by critics of the film, involved a shot of Kim looking at himself in the mirror, with an obvious cardboard cut-out of Lee’s face pasted onto the mirror’s surface.

However the action directed by Sammo Hung for the scenes with the Bruce Lee lookalikes and the footage that Bruce Lee shot for the original footage with the final three fights helped alleviate the problems the movie has. Apart from the cheesy techniques used to disguise the fact that Bruce Lee was being played by stand-ins, the movie enjoyed respectable production values.

Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports the film as holding an overall 75% approval rating based on 8 reviews, of those 6 were fresh and only 2 were rotten.

Other Game of Deaths

After the death of Bruce Lee, several studios exploited the situation by making their own versions of The Game of Death based on what they had learned of the story from production stills and magazine articles. Many of these films pre-dated Robert Clouse’s “official” Game of Death.

Goodbye Bruce Lee: His Last Game of Death () (1975)

The New Game of Death () (1976)

Enter the Game of Death () (1980)

The True Game of Death (1981) () (1979)

Game of Death II (1981) ( Tower of Death) (1981)

Clouse’s film had a sequel in 1981, Game of Death II, which also used footage from Bruce’s earlier films to have him make an appearance in the beginning of the film, only to be killed off midway, allowing his on-screen brother take on the role of protagonist. Aside from the English dub giving the “Bruce Lee” character the name Billy Lo, this movie would seem to have no connection with Clouse’s film.

The yellow-and-black tracksuit

Screenshot of Game of Death, Bruce Lee is wearing his iconic yellow-and-black tracksuit.

The yellow-and-black tracksuit which Lee wore in the film has come to be seen as something of a trademark for the actor, and is paid homage to in numerous other media. In the Clouse-directed remake, the filmmakers rationalized its presence by including a scene where Billy Lo disguises himself as one of Dr. Land’s motorcycle-riding thugs, who all wear striped jumpsuits.

In the warehouse scene, Billy Lo wears a pair of yellow Adidas shoes with black stripes and white shelltoes. Towards the end of the movie, Billy wears a pair of yellow Onitsuka Tiger shoes, with black stripes.

In movies

Uma Thurman wears a similar suit in Kill Bill Volume 1 when she travels to Japan to take on an underworld boss and assassin played by Lucy Liu. In homage to both the film and the remake, Thurman wears the suit and Onitsuka Tiger sneakers as part of her motorcycle-riding gear, and keeps the suit on during her battle with Liu and her gang, the Crazy 88.

In Shaolin Soccer, a similar suit is worn by the goalie “Empty Hand” (Danny Chan Kwok Kwan) who resembles Bruce Lee.

In the Jet Li film High Risk, Jacky Cheung plays a movie star who is losing his fighting ability due to his cowardice. When he regains his courage at the end of the film, he wears a copy of the yellow tracksuit. The role is generally felt to be a parody of Jackie Chan, but the references to Bruce Lee are also obvious.

The 1980s film The Last Dragon produced by Motown legend Berry Gordy centered around a Bruce Lee fan in search of reaching Martial arts enlightenment who instructed his students wearing the same tracksuit.

In Revenge of the Nerds, Brian Tochi’s character, Toshiro Takashi, wears the yellow jumpsuit while riding a tricycle during the inter-Greek competitions.

In video games

Marshall Law and Forrest Law, from the Tekken series of fighting games, resemble Bruce Lee’s with their moveset, whoops and yells and wears a sleeveless version of the tracksuit.

In Dead or Alive 4, Jann Lee’s third costume is none other than the tracksuit and his ending movie includes him watching Bruce Lee movies to help him practice Jeet Kune Do.

In the Playmore fighting game Rage of the Dragons, Mr. Jones (who already bares a striking reseblance to Kareem Abdul Jabbar) wears a suit very similar to the famous yellow jump suit.

The suit is present in the MMORPG Anarchy Online as a piece of equipment for powerful martial artist characters.

In Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, one equippable item is the “kung fu suit,” which is a yellow tracksuit with black vertical stripes along the sides.

Although the suit does not appear in any Street Fighter games, Fei Long wears it in several issues of the UDON Street Fighter comic book and in Masahiko Nakahira’s Cammy manga.

In the video game Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, the main character can wear an identical outfit called the “Dragon Jumpsuit”.

In the video game Shadow Hearts: From the New World talking cat and drunken master Mao confronts the master of cat martial arts, the tracksuit-clad “Bruce Meow”.

In WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008, in the “Create a WWE Superstar” function the tracksuit is emulated.

In Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4, the character Chie Satonaka’s Persona is dressed in the same yellow jumpsuit, and fights with a combination of spears and Jeet Kun Do.

In Street Fighter IV, the character Rufus wears a yellow and black tracksuit. The suit matches his personality of having a great love for martial arts movies, leading to his style being adopted from imitating martial arts movies and mail order courses.

In the online game Dragon Fist 3: Age of the Warrior, one of the characters from martial arts films is Billy Lo (with Bruce Lee being animated out) from this film, dressed in the yellow-and-black jumpsuit, fighting with Jeet Kune Do, using a yellow nunchaku (which is not found in the Character Editor) as a weapon, and the one inch punch as a special move.

In most servers of the Dragonica online game, the gladiator class can summon a Bruce Lee styled character named Bro Lee who wears the jumpsuit to perform some Kung Fu moves. The players can also buy the suit from the cash shop to equip on their characters.

The yellow-and-black tracksuit can be obtained in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon from the custom character creation menu.

In music

A short promotional video for the virtual band Gorillaz showed the fictional animated guitarist, Noodle, taking on a pack of thugs while dressed in the tracksuit and imitating Lee’s fighting style. Noodle has also worn this suit in the Game Of Death short clip from the Celebrity Takedown DVD.

The band Sugar Ray, in their video for the single “When It’s Over,” included a segment in which one of the band members fantasizes about having a kung fu battle similar to the fight scene between Lee and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The band member wears Lee’s tracksuit, his opponent wears a beard, clothes, and sunglasses similar to Abdul-Jabbar’s, and the video duplicates the scene in which a seated Kareem kicks Lee in the chest, knocking him down and leaving a huge footprint on his chest.

Topper Headon of The Clash was known to wear a similar jumpsuit at live shows.

Avant-garde guitarist Buckethead is inspired by Bruce Lee in several ways and in 2006 released a song called “Game of Death” on his website to honour this movie. He also wore a yellow tracksuit while playing live and performed with nunchakus on stage.

In manga, anime and other cartoons

In “Karate Island,” a fourth season episode of SpongeBob SquarePants (which is itself a take-off of “Game of Death”), Sandy Cheeks wears a yellow tracksuit similar to Bruce’s.

In the Urusei Yatsura episode titled “The Mendo Family’s Masquerade War,” Ataru was wearing a yellow tracksuit with black stripes while trying to court Mendou’s sister who is sporting nunchakus. Both Ataru’s yellow tracksuit and the Mendou sister’s nunchakus are a homage to Bruce Lee.

In the anime/manga Tenjho Tenge, there is a short appearance of a character named “Inosato Dan” who is the leader of the “Jun Fan Gung Fu club” (Jun Fan is Bruce Lee’s Chinese name). He resembles Bruce Lee very much, and wears the jumpsuit. However, in the anime the colors of the jumpsuit are switched to a black suit with yellow stripes.

Duel #25 of the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga features some references to Bruce Lee. Yugi’s fighting-game character of choice is a Bruce Lee clone called Bruce Ryu. His opponent, the villain of the chapter, wears the yellow jumpsuit and calls his fight with Jonouchi a “Game of Death.”

The second episode of the anime series Cowboy Bebop, “Stray Dog Strut,” further plays homage with the episode’s main antagonist being named Abdul Hakim (after Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s character) and bearing a strikingly similar appearance.

The character Mr. Tanaka from Sonic X wears the suit in an episode.

The character Sasshi, from the anime Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, also gets a uniform called the Game of Death suit, later imitating Lee in both appearance and mannerisms.

Another reference is found in Great Teacher Onizuka, where the main character, Onizuka Eikichi, wears the same suits when performing feats of strength like breaking a baseball bat with a kick in front of his class.

In episode 18 of the anime, Gin Tama, Kagura wears a suit similar to Bruce’s suit in this movie.

The character, Mandy, from The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy wore a yellow jumpsuit in the episode “Modern Primitives / Giant Billy and Mandy All-Out Attack”. The episode also had parodies from Akira (Mandy drives a bike similar to Kaneda’s in the series), the “Godzilla” franchise (there are several giant monsters that parody monsters from the franchise including the name of the episode), and Kill Bill (a check off list plus a red screened close-up mimicking the bride).

A game sprite resembling an Asian man can be seen wearing Bruce Lee’s yellow suit during the first and third season’s of ReBoot.

A Gorillabite from the band Gorillaz is titled Game of Death. In the bite, Noodle, the guitarist, dons the yellow tracksuit to take on Russel.

The cover for the third volume of the American DVD release of the anime, PaniPoni Dash!, features the main character Rebecca Miyamoto wearing a track suit similar to Bruce Lee’s. The subtitle for the DVD, “Class of Death”, also pays homage to Game of Death.

In episode 20 of Hayate the Combat Butler, Hayate asks Maria is she knows “the art of assassination”. She denies it, but Hayate and doesn’t believe her and Nagi imagines what Maria would look like wearing a yellow jumpsuit and holding nunchucks.

Episode 100 of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon depicts Master Splinter’s former owner, Hamato Yoshi, wearing the yellow tracksuit.

In the classic anime/manga series Dragon Ball During his early adventures, Goku enters a military base named “Muscle Tower” in the shape of a dumbbell, in which he visits numerous floors, fighting enemies that inhabit them. He fights a robot, a ninja, a beast, and a general of the military.

Good bookshops in Seoul that sell English fiction books?
(Seoul, South Korea)

Here are the ones I recommend:

Used Bookstores:

- What the Book in Itaewon (near the Muslim mosque in Itaewon)
What the Book gives good trade-in credit but the selection is not so great and the prices are kind of high.

- The used English bookstore right near the Lexus dealer right outside of of Noksapyeong Station
They really rip you off on trade-in credit, but the selection is better and their books are cheaper.

New Bookstores:

- Kyobo Bookstore
This place has a lot of English books. They are new and pricey. They can special-order books.

Wholesale style Fashion Online store,Korean Korea HongKong hk Japanese japan Fashion trendy collection garment clothing apparel wholesaler at cheap pr

If you want to start a business that will surely usher in huge profits for you, you can build your own clothing retail shop. There are some entrepreneurs who fear that they will not be able to get back the money that they have put in when they invest on fashion clothes. However, this is not the case when you know where to get the best deals. In order for you to make your business do well, there are a lot of things that you have to consider first. If you’re into selling fashion clothing, you have to look for a supplier that will be able to provide you with reliable and affordable deals.

When choosing from a long list of clothing suppliers, choose a company or manufacturer that sells wholesale fashion clothing. One such company is Asianfashion4u, which is a Hong Kong fashion clothing manufacturer. This supplier is your choice wholesale online shopping mall, allowing you to make your order through the Web. This is very convenient since you won’t have to leave your store in order for you to shop for new clothing supplies. Opting to buy from Asianfashion4u will provide you with several benefits.

The first benefit that you enjoy from procurement at Asianfashion4u is the chance to avail of its low prices. When you order fashion clothing wholesale, it will be given to you along with a cut-off price. This Hong Kong clothing wholesaler sells its items at an economic price, when you shop in bulk orders. Another advantage that Asianfashion4u offers is the utmost trendiest styles in the fashion industry. This is something that you can expect, despite the fact that Asianfashion4u sells its wholesale fashion clothing at lesser costs.

Asianfashion4u always puts the interests of its clients first. This is the reason why you get reliable yet, cheap ladies wholesale clothing. Not only this, it is possible for you to shop from this fashion wholesale company even if you are not managing your business in Asia. Asianfashion4u sells its apparel internationally. This means that you can buy its affordable clothes anywhere you are in the world. The wholesale buyers of this manufacturer usually come from the United Kingdom, United States, Singapore, and Thailand.

The apparel that Asianfashion4u.com provides is inspired by Japan & Korea Fashion Clothing. This implies that your clothing supplies wholesale are comprised of chic and trendy designs. You can choose from cute designs such as bubble-sleeved blouses and lace skirts. Or else, you can go for funky styles like off-shoulder blouses and checkered cotton socks. Asianfashion4u is also a sexy tank halter tops supplier, with styles taken from L.A. fashion and other top fashion districts.

There is no way that you can get designer clothes wholesale at affordable prices. Fashion clothing usually means expensive tags. But when you shop at Asianfashion4u, you will be able to supply your clothing retailer shop with designer and fashion apparel without sacrificing your profit. This could mean more customers and a higher profit margin for you.

Washington D.C.: Our Nation’s Capital

Washington DC is the capital of the United States of America. When in a new area, we find it beneficial to get the lay of the land. We knew were not going to attempt to drive into Washington, DC with Boss.(Remember that Boss is a one ton dually with an extended bed and wide hips. Finding a parking place is difficult. We have heard the horror stories of the Beltway, not to mention the traffic in DC proper. The beltway is an Interstate highway system, which encircles the city: well known for major traffic jams.

We found out that DC has a wonderful Metro, train/subway, system which will take the traveler almost anywhere in the general area. First we had to find the stations near us and check out the parking. The station at College Park is convenient, but has a postage stamp parking lot. Mostly students from the University of Maryland use this depot via their shuttle bus. The other station, the terminus of the Green line is Greenbelt, the planned city built after W.W.II. The parking lot there has its own shuttle bus to assist the patrons from the far reaches of the lot. Nearby is Greenbelt Park, a hidden gem in the National Park Service. Even though the park is officially closed at this time, dry camping is still allowed in one of the areas for only $14.00 per night (half for Seniors with the Golden Passport). A dump station is available for the necessary. The campground is less than a half mile from the College Park train station.

Our goal today was to scale the Washington Monument for the aerial view of the city and then visit the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. To enter the Washington Monument, you need to have a ticket, picked up for free at a nearby kiosk. To get a ticket you have to be there by 8:00 AM. We arrived about 11:00 and all were taken.

We headed to the Lincoln Memorial via the Vietnam Wall, a moving sight with the flowers, wreaths, and letters laid at the base of the monument. At the South end are two books with the names of the dead in alphabetical order. The names on the memorial are chronological. Look up the name of the individual in the book and you will be directed to the panel on which his/her name appears. Across a small green are two more memorials dedicated to the survivors of the war: one of three soldiers, the other of the women who served.

What can be said about the Lincoln Memorial which has not been done before. These days barricades and fencing restrict the tourists’ movements. You cannot walk completely around the Memorial on the upper level. On the ground floor, however, is a museum which chronicles the construction of the Memorial and the events which have taken place at the site, such as the freedom marches, Marion Anderson’s concert, and Martin Luther King Jr. “I have a Dream” speech. Once again the NPS has scored with a wonderful movie relating the importance of Abe Lincoln’s life through his words and pictures and the impact throughout the history of our great country. The musical background is Aaron Copeland’s Lincoln Portrait.

Down from the Lincoln Memorial, opposite the Mall from the Viet Nam Memorial, is the Korean War Memorial. Make sure you have a ranger tour to derive the utmost from the experience. The purpose of the memorial is to involve everyone, the living and dead, into the experience. Originally there were to be thirty-eight(re: 38th Parallel) life-sized statues of soldiers climbing the rugged hill to freedom. The number was halved to nineteen.

Approaching from the road the one soldier is looking over his shoulder signaling to the troops massed in the woods behind to come out into the clearing, filled with juniper and rocks. As you climb the hill to the US flag, the symbol of freedom, you see at the end etched in stone that over 53,000 men lost their lives and more than 8,000 were MIA. At the top is a reflecting pool with a triangular wall jutting into it (the Korean Peninsula). Not to be overlooked is the dark wall on the other side of the hill. Into the wall are carved 2,500 photographic images of men and women who were ancillary to the combatants. You cannot see the faces from afar, only up close. Drawing near the wall the real faces can be seen staring out at you, and you yourself are also reflected in the wall along with the nineteen soldiers climbing the hill to freedom. You become part of the memorial and memorial becomes part of you. This is an eerily haunting feeling which lingers throughout the day.

Across the road to the tidal basin we walked. The thousands of Japanese Cherry Trees were in full bloom. In the distance stood the Jefferson and the Washington Memorials. Along the way lays the memorial to Franklin D. Roosevelt. This consists of four outdoor rooms of writings, water and statuary, each one dedicated to a term in office. The monument is a lovely tribute to a great president who led us out of the despair of depression and the horrors of war. The tribute pales in comparison to what we had just experienced earlier.

The Jefferson Memorial is another on the must see list in Washington DC. Dedicated to reason and enlightenment, this makes a fitting end to an emotion filled day.

Some impressions of Washington and Washingtonians. The city looks like Illinois in the summer: construction everywhere you look; cranes, chain link fencing, barricades. Police presence where ever you look: on foot, in cars, on bicycles, motorcycles and horses. Joggers, I mean many joggers, not just a few pass by no matter where you are; in the park, on the tidal basin paths, on the street. People out in great numbers, either seeing the sights in small groups or large tours, or individually. A calliope of people, scents, sights, and sounds fill every pore of the body.

The early bird catches the worm, or breakfast with our Senators. Every Thursday morning at 8:30, while Congress is in session Senators Dick Durbin and Peter Fitzgerald hold a continental breakfast with their constituents in one of the subcommittee rooms in the Dirkson Building. We were also given passes to the Senate and House of Rep galleries. Check with your Senators, if they do the same.

A tour of the Capital is given only by Senate or House personnel. You have to know someone to visit your building. What has our country come to when you can’t even visit your capital building? Luckily we had gallery passes.

Our first stop was the Senate. What a marvelous place to see government in action.. We were disappointed by the paucity of gallery occupants. Less than ten percent of the gallery was full. The ones who came in were mostly school groups. Granted no earth shaking votes were being taken, but we heard Sen. Barbara Boxer of CA argue for an amendment to add antiterrorist devices to commercial airlines. This was supported by Sen. Evan Bayh from IN who also spoke. Sen. John McCain of AZ spoke in rebuttal. Sen. Kennedy came into the Chambers later. Every hour the President Pro Temp of the Senate changes. Every fifteen minutes, the court reporters rotate. What is missing is modern electronics. There are no tote boards, cell phones. The only computers we saw were one on the secretary’s desk and the ones operating the television cameras.

From the Senate to the House of Representatives. Whereas the Senators had individual desks and chairs, the Reps. sit in pew like seats with dividers between them. They have no desks. If they want to speak , they must go to one of the tables on either side of the center aisle and be recognized. One representative was giving a speech about bringing the troops home from Iraq. He finally withdrew his amendment, but got his anti-war point recorded in the Congressional Record.

Went to the Rayburn Building, where our Representative, Jesse Jackson, Jr. has his office. We still vote in Illinois and keep up with the local politics. He was out of the office, but his little daughter, Jessica, was in charge and had the staff running around looking for a lost soccer ball. His staff is in process of setting up a tour of the Capital for us.

To complete our day on “The Hill”, we visited the Supreme Court. They were not hearing any cases that afternoon. So we were able to visit the courtroom and receive a lecture (tour) of the building. When they are in session, you have to get into line very early to listen to each case. When all of the seats are taken the rest of those in line are allowed to sit on wooden chairs in the rear of the Chambers for three minute periods. The plaintiff and defendant lawyers have only one half hour to plead their case. Did you know that there is another court above the Supreme Courtroom? It is a basketball court. Both courts cannot be in session simultaneously.

We tried to see the Ford Theater, where President Lincoln was assassinated. The line was very long for the guided lecture. We are not allowed to bring backpacks into the theater. But after 12:00 you can go for a look see inside for a few minutes.

On our way to the theater we passed the new International Spy Museum. The price of entry was slightly steep, $12.00 per senior. I was expecting to be disappointed and ripped off. Much to my surprise, I was neither. The museum is high tech and delves into the many aspects of espionage, from Biblical time to modern surveillance devices and techniques. The museum is divided into different sections with many hands on activities. We spent over two hours there and could spend more time watching all of the videos and programs. Yes, Agent Maxwell Smart, they had your telephone shoe too. There were many replicas from the cold war, even the poison injecting umbrella. Did you know that Julia Child was once a spy? Maybe that’s how she got all of her recipes.

Off to the Ford theater we went (only a block away). Lincoln saw part of “My American Cousin”. Today “1776″ was on stage. Unlike 40 years ago, Lincoln’s box is now off limits. A picture hangs in from of the bunting where Boothe caught his spur and thereby broke his leg. The museum downstairs and the house across the street, where Lincoln died are closed for renovation,

On the way to the department of the Interior, we passed by the Willard Hotel, a strikingly beautiful edifice, where final negotiations were held to keep the Union united in 1861. We passed by the White House. Guess what—under construction—many blockages. The closest anyone can see of the White House these days is by watching West Wing. Another beautiful building is the Old Executive Office Building (one of the largest in Washington), next to the White House. This is also closed to the public. Interesting is that on the other side of the White House is the Treasury, close enough for the President to keep an eye on the money.

Finally we made it to the Department of the Interior. The building is more than two blocks long. Anne James gave us a wonderful tour of the facility. There is a large museum in the building depicting the history and various aspects of the department. The Interior was formed in 1849. The primary foci of it today are Land management and Indian Affairs. On the seventh floor is the old cafeteria with murals painted by artists from various Native American tribes. The windows give a beautiful view of the city.

All of the government buildings are closed on Saturday. Off to the Smithsonian we went. Everything is free. The first museum we wanted to see was the National Air and Space Museum. Get there early to avoid the long lines. The museum is two floors tracing the history of flight and space exploration. Some of the original aircraft include Lindbergh’s Spirit of St Louis, Yeager’s Bell-1, Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo capsules, V-1 rockets, Steve Fossett’s balloon capsule, and many others. The Enola Gay is in storage. Later this year the museum will open an addition near Dulles International Airport and display much more of its collection.

We had a short time to visit one of the lesser museums of the Smithsonian. Next door is the Hirshhorn Museum specializing in modern sculpture and paintings. The museum, itself is a work of art, circular in design with a beautiful center atrium with a fountain and surrounded on the outside with elegant sculptures. They had an exhibit of Gerhard Richter, an East German escapee. His paintings depict either a bad case of myopia or an unwillingness to say openly what he wanted to say. Many of his paintings are blurred, but photographic in nature. He loved the use of the color gray.

Today we planned as a day off. I had wanted to do a little genealogical research. So I figured that today would be a good one to find out information about my relatives. The National Archives are located in Washington DC and they have a branch in College Park, MD. Arriving at the Archives, NARA, I registered and received a photo ID to do research. Sadly, all of the records I was seeking were at the downtown office. The gentleman said that there was a free shuttle bus, which runs every hour on the hour between the two facilities. I scarcely believed my ears. Noon came and I hopped on the promised shuttle. I thought that this would take some time due to the horror stories of Washington DC traffic and the blockades everywhere. Taking the main roads, we passed through Hayettsville, Catholic University with the Basilica, many ethnic neighborhoods. Within thirty-five minutes, we were at NARA, on Pennsylvania Avenue, in the heart of downtown DC. We had hit the mother lode again. Free transportation without the hassle of finding a parking space at the METRO and the same travel time from College Park to DC proper.

NARA is the repository of federal records more than thirty years old (72 for census). The exhibition hall, closed for renovations, has the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution on display. Showing my registration card I was allowed complete access to the microfilm sections and later to the main reading room, where original records are pulled for the researcher by a very helpful staff. One note of caution: be sure you leave enough time for the record pulling. It takes some time to retrieve them. I took the four o’clock shuttle back to College Park.

We took the NARA shuttle downtown and went to the National Gallery of Art, a mere two blocks away. This is an incredible series of beautiful buildings with two main structures: East Wing and West Wing. Inside are fountains, gardens with live flowers, and, of course art. Their collection of Impressionists is not as extensive as other museums, but they do have something special: the only Leonardo Da Vinci in the US, Ginevra de’Benci. We spent the entire day immersed in the beauty provided by the great master artists and sculpturers. There were special exhibits by Gainsborough, Kirchner, Vuillard, and Matisse. Next week begins an exhibit of Remington’s Night paintings. We want to go back.

At the entrances of many of the exhibit rooms, there are boxes with information cards in different languages about the works in the specific hall. The visitor reads the card and then replaces it in the box for others to use. I have not seen that type of information at other galleries.

We finally got through to Andy Wilson, the intern for Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. and had a tour of the Capital. His staff was happy to see us again. A staff led tour opens doors for the tourist not available to the ordinary gallery viewer. We were able to go through hidden stairwells and go into the rotunda with a magnificent view of the capital dome. Today the Senate was discussing the Budget, which it later passed. The House was discussing natural gas drilling. We were on the way back to the Rayburn building, when the House called for a vote. Bells kept ringing in the corridors, and the Representatives we hurrying to the House chambers. It was exciting to see our government in action.

Because it was lunchtime, we were shown where the cafeteria was in the House complex. If you are ever in the area, I recommend eating lunch there. The cafeteria resembles a food court. The prices are reasonable and the portions ample.

Our next stop was the Library of Congress, the Jefferson Building. Self-guided tours are offered, but the docent guided ones are better. The paintings and statuary in the great hall are allegorical. Everywhere you look, you see the thought that went into the construction to one of the greatest libraries in the world. On display are one of the three complete Gutenberg Printed Bibles in the world and the last hand illustrated written Bible. The main reading room is dedicated to the different subjects of knowledge. The Library of Congress has its own web site, www.loc.gov. Here you have access to their card catalogue and to other information offered by the library.

Today we journeyed to The Holy Lands, a.k.a., The Franciscan Monastery. The facility was built so that people could visit the Holy Land Shrines, without having to spend all of their money to go to the Middle East. The shrines are replicas of Golgatha, the sepulcher, the manger at Bethlehem, etc. There are also replicas of the catacombs. Tour guides give insights into how the sites were authenticated. Even being a skeptic, I was impressed by their knowledge and the significance of the shrine. This is a highly recommended stop for any Christian visiting Washington.

A few blocks away rises the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. The church dedicated to Mary, the Mother of Jesus Christ, was started in 1920s and is still under construction. The architecture is a combination of Byzantine and Roman: the dome fashioned after the Capital dome and the Campanile after the Washington Monument. Besides the main upper Nave and the Crypt nave, there are numerous side chapels and oratories sponsored by different groups of people in the world. Each one is dedicated to Mary. The predominant manner of expressing the artwork is via mosaics. The sheer amount and quality of the mosaics ranks it among the top cities of the world.

On to the Natural History Museum. What we liked about the museum was the use of skeletons to classify the various species of animals, from prehistoric times to the present era. Some areas are under construction: namely the mammals Hall and the Native American exhibits. The geological collection of stones, especially the Hope Diamond, salivates any woman who loves to wear beautiful gems. The myriad colors of the different types of geological formations are a delight to the eyes.

The staff at the museum do a lot of things right. Comparing this museum is like comparing apples and oranges with the Chicago Natural History Museum. Each one has its strengths. Overall, I would have to rate the Field Museum in Chicago a higher grade for extensiveness of its collection, except for the geology department.

Visited the Holocaust Museum in DC. This is a moving experience. I have done extensive research on this black spot in World history. I was impressed by the lack of bias in the exhibits. The self-guided tour takes you up to the fourth floor, where the history of the rise of Hitler and Nazism is told in visual pictures and short videos. The lesson learned on this floor is that much of the prejudices, feeding upon ordinary people’s fears, and the manipulation of the media are still with us even seventy years after the events leading to this tragedy. Moving to the third floor, one encounters the solution to the Jewish Problem: the ghettoes, slave camps, death compounds, etc. Not only were Jews hunted down, but also Jehovah Witnesses, gypsies, Polish and Russian Intelligentia, and anyone deemed inferior to the Aryan ideals. On display are mounds of footwear from the prisoners, many of their personal artifacts, and one of the boxcars used as transportation to the camps. From my readings of the atrocities committed in the camps, many of the exhibits were understated. The second floor exhibits emphasize the resistance to Nazism by the Jews and many citizens of occupied countries. Also recorded, in a muted way, is a condemnation of the silence of many allies denying knowledge of the genocide, which was known to be occurring.

On a lighter note, we visited the US Forestry Service. How do you say Smokey Bear? We found useful information about our national forests and resources for camping and visiting them.

On the way back to the Archives, we stopped by the Smithsonian Castle, so named because of the architecture of the building. The main floor is open to the public and acts as a welcome center, complete with a video, explaining the various museums of the Institution. The Commons at the west end of the building is used as a banquet hall. It reminds me of the nave of a medieval gothic chapel, without the stained glass windows.

The path back took us through a butterfly garden. Most of the plants were not in bloom, yet. There were many signs describing the various plants and trees and the type of butterflies which they attract. This was a beautiful ending to a cathartic day.

The National Zoo boasts the home of the giant pandas. On the whole, we were disappointed with the treatment of most of the animals. No zoo is perfect. Each one puts their energies and resources on specific species of animals. From our observations, it seems that the National Zoological Park has a lot to learn from other institutions. Most of the animals, especially the more advanced animals are separated from each other. We did not speak with anyone and find out if there any extenuating circumstances for our observations. Even the great apes were secluded from each other. We thought about what would have happened at the Brookfield Zoo a few years ago, when the gorilla saved and cared for the child who fell into their exhibit, if they were not allowed to socialize and live naturally as a troop.

Took a trip to Walter Reed Army Hospital today. This the place where presidents get their annual physical exam. On campus the AFIP (Armed Forces Institute of Pathology) has a museum dedicated to medical research and history. They have an extensive microscope collection, beginning with the primitive ones of the 17th century to the modern electron microscopes of today. They are presently exhibiting the cycle of life from the hereditary stage to birth. They use many different forms of photography, from MRIs and X-rays to normal photos. Many are surreal.

After spending a couple of hours at the museum, I wanted to visit Georgetown and embassy row. Driving in DC can be a real challenging experience. Not only do you have the diagonal streets intersecting the grid patterns, you have creative signage, or the lack thereof. Maggie was getting more upset because of the labyrinth we were traversing. We finally found Embassy Row, on and around New Hampshire near the Dupont Circle. Off the circle is M Street, which is the main drag of Georgetown Heights. We got a great view of the stores and the throng of people on the streets, because traffic moves at a tortoise’s crawl.

Crossing the Potomac River, we wanted to avoid traffic to get back to College Park. I knew there was a highway which runs along the front of Arlington Cemetery. Eventually this would take us to I 95 and College Park. Cruising down the highway a police officer flagged me over and told me to follow him. I did not think that I was the millionth vehicle to travel the road. I was also sure I wasn’t speeding: just keeping up with the Jones’s. I found out that duallys were not allowed on this road since 9/11. Other pickup trucks, SUVs, etc. are allowed. He took down my vital information and then tried to take a mug shot for the FBI. After breaking two cameras he was finally successful. Look for my photo at your nearest post office. Now that we are wanted by the FBI, we will just have to flee the country.

On Monday, April 21, 2003 we toured the Smithsonian American History Museum. We spent five hours there and could have spent an additional five hours. Some of the highlights include Louis Armstrong’s first trumpet. The crinkled bell of the horn reminded me of my trumpet in grammar school. The exhibits on the American Presidency and of the First Ladies were exceptional. I especially enjoyed the traffic control through the exhibits. There was usually a specific entrance and exit. This made traveling through them easier. The first floor was devoted to various industries: agriculture, maritime, railroads, information, transportation, and Julia Child’s Kitchen . The museum has something for just about anyone. Having been to Fort McHenry, we were happy to see The Star Spangled Banner undergoing restoration.

The numismatic collection of coins and money is very extensive. What I never realized was the variety of currencies, both foreign and domestic, in circulation during the beginning of our country’s history. Each colony printed and minted its own currency. British, French and Spanish currencies were also considered legal tender. It was worse than the problems the Europeans have with the Euro. A common currency was a necessity to have a real country.

Went to The National Building Museum. The building’s beautiful atrium soars fifteen stories and is supported by large pillars. On the first and second floors are exhibit halls surrounding the atrium. Some of the exhibits are semi-permanent. You never know what will be shown. The atrium was a buzz with people setting up for the greatest craft show in the country. The Smithsonian Institute holds an annual contest for craftsmen and the winners exhibit their work at this museum. The items on display are also for sale.

A few short blocks away is the Postal Museum, a part of the Smithsonian. This museum explores the history of mail service, from blazing trails from New York to Philadelphia, to Ben Franklin’s appointment as Postal chief in the mid 1700s by The Crown, to the Pony Express, RFD, and Air mail. The building itself is impressive. It is in the Old Post Office with a magnificent main hallway with many cages lining both sides.

Next door is Union Station. It is still a pretty impressive building, having undergone extensive restoration and now housing many food courts and different shops to pick up last minute items before going home.

Today we visited most of the rest of the Smithsonian Institute: the Freer Museum of Art, the Sackler Gallery, the Museum of African Art and the Arts and Industry building. This sounds like a lot of walking, but the museums are small in area. The first two emphasize Eastern art from China, Japan, India, and Islamic works from different countries. Some of the pieces from early China and from the Islamic World are exquisite. Not to be missed in the Freer Museum is the Peacock Room by James Whistler. He got carried away with a commission to decorate a dining room. He took the peacock motif to the maximum extent. Even the ceiling is painted peacock feathers. The room is breath taking and is a perfect receptacle for the Chinese Porcelain collection of the owner.

The African Museum has many old pieces from ancient Nubia, which is South of Egypt in present Sudan. There are also many 20th Century pieces reflecting the culture of the people of Western Africa.

Not to be missed is the Arts and Industry Building, the host for many Presidential Inaugural Balls. The atrium is spacious and shaped like a cross. The building hosts special exhibits, which change on a regular basis.

One other exhibit was of a tropical butterfly house. Enclosed in a closed environment (temperature 90°, humidity, 85%), hundreds of butterflies from Central America flew at will. I seemed to be a particular favorite, because they kept landing on my head. Maybe my animal attraction has been lost on the wrong species. Or perhaps they like gray hair. They were very beautiful.

Went to the tower of the Old Post Office: a different building than the Postal Museum. Washington DC has had a series of Post Offices as the demands of the Capital increased. This building has an eight-story atrium with an additional three-story bell tower. On the twelfth floor an open observation deck gives a birds eye view of the city below. Within the tower are the Congress Bells. These change bells are still rung by hand by a special group of ringers. They practice every Thursday evening to perfect their skills. They hold the record for pealing. A peal is a series of over five thousand rings of the bells according to a set pattern, which is never repeated, for the three-hour duration of the peal. The group has a conductor who directs the ringers in the precise patterns. If they miss a beat, they have to begin all over.

Asian tradition of choosing a relic?

in many asian cultures there is a tradition where a baby shortly after they are born is given various relics that has special meanings that the baby can choose one- like a pencil would mean they will grow up to be smart etc. what is this called? i know where im from (s.korea) i did it at my first bday. i need to know what this is called and maybe the list of items that are used and their meanings…
thanks

Doljabi (Doljanchi)

The baby is propped up at a table of various foods and an assortment of objects and urged to pick up one of the items. It is believed the item the baby picks up symbolically foretells his or her own future or would influence his or her fate.

On the table are usually money, a large bundle of thread, rice, and a pencil. If the baby picks money, it means he or she is going to be wealthy. Rice means the baby will never have to go hungry throughout life, which was a very important aspect when people often suffered from famines. The baby will live a long life with thread and be a scholar by picking a pencil.

Now some parents put a computer mouse on the table, which means the success in the high-tech field, or a toothbrush, hoping that the baby will be a dentist.

Nike’s Eco-Friendly Uniform For A Brazilian Team

Recently, Nike, one of the biggest apparel makers in the world announced that they will be sponsoring eco-friendly team uniforms for the Brazilian National Team. This is in cooperation with the Nike Middle East and Sun and Sand Sports. The uniforms come in what the makers called as kits which are composed of a set of sports uniforms. The kits given individually to Brazil’s top football players will be worn on the event that will take place this summer in South Africa. One of the prominent recipient of this environmentally-friendly and technologically-advanced kit is Robinho (Robson de Souza) – the youngest player of the team.

“This summer in South Africa Nike will give footballers an edge by providing the newest and most innovative product for the game’s greatest players,” says Charlie Denson, President, Nike Brand in an interview. “With today’s announcement, we are equipping athletes with newly designed uniforms that not only look great and deliver performance benefits, but are also made with recycled materials, creating less impact on our environment.”

The rivalry in the fabric manufacturing industries does not end at making the highest qualities of products and on the most pioneering features but also on the mechanics in which the products affect the environment. This comes at a reality when major manufacturers of workwear uniforms and corporate uniforms for industrial and other work place utility chose to use eco-friendly fabric. This type of fabric is made purely of natural materials and has no effect to the environment from pre to post production. The process by which the fabric is made is as well can be considered as safe to the environment.

The beginning of the international clamor for environmental responsibility marks the start of this movement. This is also a response to the global claims of preventing the harmful climate change wherein natural calamities can occur at the most inconvenient of times and unexpected. Other industries like the automobile manufacturers and the petroleum companies have already set their feet off the usual and embraced the idea of saving the planet by creating cars that has lower carbon emissions and by generating fuel that contains lower carbon materials or using plants for bio-diesel correspondingly.

Since fabrics that are used in medical uniforms, corporate uniforms, hospitality apparels, jackets, and sports uniforms are created using elaborate machines that either use electricity or diesel, producers thought that it is but fitting that they shift to a more cost effective yet efficient process thus the eco-friendly fabrics. For the part of one of the highest producers of human needs, this movement is not just a good cause but as well as a brilliant idea.

The uniforms are actually made of recycled polyester with each, the jackets and the jerseys, were from 8 recycled plastic bottles. The unveiling of the kits was lead by the representative of the Embassy of Brasil, Mrs. Cecilia Bicca at the Mall of the Emirates. The report also read that all of the other Nike sponsored national teams that will vie this summer will be wearing the same athletic uniforms made of eco-friendly products – a first in Nike’s history and the footballs history. The other national teams that will be using the said kits this summer event are the Netherlands, Portugal, USA, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Serbia, and Slovenia. Additionally, these great kits are also available commercially in selected outlets in the Middle East.

NORTH KOREA AND NORTH AMERICA

In between Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea lies the twin Koreas as a peninsula consisting of Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the Republic of Korea (South Korea).

Each one is an independent country having lot of problems in between them.

The North Korea is bigger than South Korea in area.

Pyongyang is the capital of North Korea whereas Seoul is for South Korea.

The literacy in both countries is about 95-98 per cent.

The historic background tells us, during the Second World War, America occupied South Korea and Russia, North Korea.

The two countries of Korea became independent in 1948.

But during 1950, North Korean army attacked the South Korea and the famous Korean War was initiated.

It appears the neighboring countries will have always problems and enmity.

It is true with most of the countries in the world.

Is it a universal phenomenon?

The Korean War, we find as a chapter in every world history book, ended in July 1953.

Kim Il Sung ruled Korea since 1948 and died in July 1994.

Several proposals were made to unify the North and South Koreas but in vain.

The disputes between these two countries are well known to the whole world.

South Korea is fortunate to be free from a dynastic rule.

It is a rich country with many industries – textiles, electronics, petrochemicals, ship and motor vehicles.

Koreans are having world famous construction businesses.

It ranks second in ship building in the world.

Koreans are hard working people who lost many of their ancestors in the cruel wars.

South Korea became the first Asian country ever to reach semi-finals in World Cup Football.

Both Koreans are good in sports.

We can see them in knocking off many gold medals in Olympic Games.

In the political scene North Korea has invited more enemies than the South because of its adamant administration by the dynasty.

Kim Jong Il, the ailing Dictator rules North Korea.

He has three sons, one out them Kim Jong Un has fair chance of ruling the country next with the help of his brother-in-law Chang sung Taek.

North Korea wants to be a nuclear power which is not liked by the Americans.

There were many talks between them but none of them was successful.

How to make North Korea to stand down in their nuclear program? – is the big question American Administration headed by Barack Obama is worried about.

Recent incident of sentencing two American female journalists Euna Lee (36) and Laura Ling (32) to 12 years of hard labor has angered the Americans.

The United States of America is furious about the abduction of these two women journalists, but it can not react vehemently in order to tackle North Korea carefully and cautiously by the new President Obama.

Therefore, the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton said the U. S. Government views the case as wholly separate from the other issues which divide Pyongyang and Washington.

Relation between Japan and North Korea is also not good.

North Korea is selling weapons of mass destruction to other countries.

Stopping this dangerous action is one of the foremost duties of the international communities.

Inflicting sufficient economic pain through new sanctions to make North Korea to rethink its determination to be a nuclear power is another aspect the world bodies have to consider.

Stiffer sanctions in fact, will cripple the North Korean economy and the innocent people will suffer a lot.

To do all these, China, the Great Nation has to come forward and help.

One of the sanctions, it appears, is to freeze the bank accounts of North Korea in China.

Whether China will do it?

One has to wait and see.

There are countries in the world that do not follow certain accepted norms for international cooperation and coordination.

North Korea is unfortunately one of them according to Western countries.

1) In terms of the actors in East Asian history, who has the most power and who has the most authority?

Note: The different histories of China, Japan, and Korea have various various actors in each (i.e. emperor, shogun, oiran, aristocrats, brick-makers, etc.) Please identify and explain which actor has the most power and authority. You may compare and contrast at least 2 countries.

Thanks in advance!

That is a little vague, but Japanese and Koreans were Chinese long ago who migrated to those two countries. That is why Korean and Japanese languages, customs, and cultures have Chinese influence.

China was the leading power a long time ago but Japan was never far from them – WWII is when they came to great prominence as we all know. Chinese and Koreans were their slaves then.

Microsoft Dynamics GP Tables Overview: Advises to Reports Designer

Each Corporate ERP application should be exposed to Crystal, SSRS, or another reporting tool designer via ODBC or native database driver connectors. In generic case, where you are report programmer and you are trying to get the initial help, check if your Corporate ERP or Accounting application has Software Development Kit (SDK), where its technology layer should be documented for Software Developers, Coders and Reports Designers. In our small publication we will concentrate on Microsoft Dynamics GP tables structure, fields, tables groups and how to get further information in reports design. The most typical reports, as we heard from Dynamics GP, Great Plains Dynamics customers are Sales Commission, Sales by Product/Item Class/Region, Product Profitability (where you link Sales Order and Purchase Order Processing modules data for specific item class or item group), Item Barcode printout report (especially in Retail or Warehouse Management operations, where customers prefer to have Dynamics GP as initial barcoding source, versus having it in such applications as Microsoft Retail Management System), Project Profitability Report, etc. As bonus topics, we will also touch some international business Corporate ERP issues, especially when your corporation is planning to expand to Russia or Brazil. If your case is not listed here, feel free to contact us directly. Let’s begin:

1. Dynamics GP SDK. As current version of GP 10.0 as well as earlier versions: 9.0, 8.0, 7.5, 7.0, 6.0, 5.5 is or were distributed on CDs, you can install SDK from CD #2. We expect version 11.0 to be distributed on DVD (it should be released in May or in first half of 2010). Microsoft Dynamics GP SDK has complete tables diagram, which you could print out or review on your screen. This method is very good for profound analysis (when you expect really complex report, combining several GP modules in one report). Dynamics GP SDK sometimes is confused and referred as GP eConnect (this SDK is initially dedicated to ecommerce Dynamics GP developers, currently eConnect covers majority of Dynamics GP modules and functionality. For version 10.0 eConnect SQL stored procedures are installed automatically, as they are required by 10.0 version technology)

2. Shortcut to get quicker to the info about GP table, field or form. If you think that there is no need for you to invest your time in Dynamics GP SDK tables structure diagram, you can simply log in Great Plains and then click on Dynamics GP -> Tools -> Resource Description -> Tables (fields, or windows). Feel free to do self discovery – as typical example we would like to give you Sales Order Processing Work Transaction Tables Group: Select Tables, product name Microsoft Dynamics GP, Series Sales, sort by Table Group Technical Name, and then locate Sales Work. You should be able to find SOP10100 (Sales Transaction Work – this is your SOP document header table) and SOP10200 (Sales Transaction Amounts Work – this is SOP Document line table). These tables are very popular in eCommerce reporting and integration scenarios for Microsoft Dynamics GP Great Plains

3. Additional advises on Crystal Report, SSRS design. In our Dynamics GP consulting practice we saw multiple cases, when Crystal Reports designer failed completely in report delivery. Typical mistake was to try CR wizard in linking GP tables on the report level. We strongly suggest you to consider separation of reports presentation and data pulling logics. Crystal Reports, SSRS – these are very good reporting tools, but they do not have to be perfect in reports base SQL query programming. If you like to enjoy flexibility and total control on the report results, consider separating report SQL pulling login in MS SQL Server, Union, View or Stored Procedure. If you follow this advice, such issues as rows duplication (this bug is very difficult to catch, as CR doesn’t allow debugging service, and usually you are blamed for duplication when report is already in production)

4. Reports design for older versions of Great Plains Dynamics, eEnterprise or Great Plains Accounting for DOS, Windows or Mac. Here you have to deploy ODBC connections to Pervasive SQL 2000 (or Btrieve, however large number of Great Plains Accounting installations were ported to Pervasive SQL 2000 SP3 or 4). If you are on Pervasive SQL 2000, you should review DDF files generation (for GPA and Great Plains Dynamics on Pervasive SQL/Btrieve) or Ctree ODBC driver connection methods. You can also consider building reports in Microsoft Access, where you have robust linked table option, or MS SQL Server 2000/2005 linked server construction (this method is highly recommended as it allows you to combine cross-platform data on the same report, for example from Oracle base Sales Order Processing external application and Great Plains Dynamics on Pervasive SQL 2000)

5. Crystal Reports for SAP Business One. SB1 is recommended if you are relatively small multinational corporation with headquarters in USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa with Microsoft Dynamics GP Corporate ERP application and you are expanding to such regions as Brazil, China, Russia, Germany, Japan, Korea, where Dynamics GP is not available in its localized version. Please, review SAP B1 SDK in order to understand SBO tables structure and interrelations. There is also the option to review table and field names if you log in SAP Business One, select File -> View System Information and then place your cursor over the form and field – technical info (table and field names) will be shown in the left down corner status bar. SAP B1 was initially designed with International Business considerations and we know examples when major multinational corporation decided to switch completely from Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains) to SAP Business One in its headquarters after implementing SAP Business One for Brazilian subsidiary. SAP Business One crosses the borders of ASCII table and it support Unicode and hieroglyphs: Chinese, Japanese, Korean (which is very limited or almost not possible in Dynamics GP – you can try limited Crystal Reports for Great Plains with Chinese language support, if you consider NJ Star extensions)

6. Dynamics GP/SAP Business One puzzle if you are moving to Russian, Ukrainian, Kazakh market as multinational company. Technically Russian language is compliant to ASCII standard. However Russian Federation has very complex accounting reporting and compliance legislation. Microsoft Dynamics GP is not localized for Russian market (you can consider Axapta or Navision, if your foreign subsidiary Corporate ERP budget permits). SAP Business One is available and certified in Russia (where it has tough competition with local Accounting packages, such as 1S Bukhgalteria). We plan to publish special cycle of articles, dedicated to Russian Corporate ERP market, where we will be discussing SAP, Microsoft Dynamics and local packages pluses and minuses, FAQ in 2010

7. Dynamics GP / SAP B1 combination for Brazilian Subsidiary. Here you might face the situation, similar to described above for Russia. In Brazil you also have Microsoft Dynamics AX and NAV localized (with some restrictions) and SAP Business One is very advanced, but facing tough competition from local Corporate ERP packages, such as Microsiga

8. Please, give us a call 1-866-528-0577, help@albaspectrum.com http://www.albaspectrum.com We speak English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Russian. Our consulting rates are very competitive and we should be able to cover your domestic and Worldwide Corporate ERP consulting and support needs. We support all the versions of Microsoft Dynamics GP, Great Plains Dynamics, eEnterprise, Great Plains Accounting, SAP Business One

Would you pay $250 for a very nice Dashboard Camera?

I own a Pawnshop and I am considering buying a bunch of Dashboard Cameras to resell. They are very very nice:

Constantly recording (you can set it up so even if you turn off your car it still records 24/7)
Saves videos onto an SD picture card
Overwrites old footage so it is constantly recording
Has a GPS in it so when you watch it on your comp you can see exactly where you are
Displays how fast your going
Slightly slightly smaller then a toilet paper roll and REALLY sleek looking

The bad:
Made in Korea most of the box is in Korean
I would have to sell for $250 (I pay 200)

I bought it because I am a security buff. But im wondering if Car guys would shell out $250 for this really nice driving camera?? I thinking about putting out $800 in these things to resell. They really are wild but would people buy them from me?

Thanks a lot!

The “bad” you mention is actually a plus for you; the last 20 years has seen Korea go upwards in electronics technology.

If the instructions are only written in Korean, that would likely mean the cameras were not made for export. The large Korean companies always use English for exported items.

But that’s not a problem; find a Korean-to-English translator where you live; you could also find a Korean-American school student and pay them a reasonable fee for translation.

.

Samsung Korea Research Institute of macroeconomic Research Department

Samsung Korea Research Institute of macroeconomic Research Department in charge of the exchange rate of Kim Yong-shuttle told the reporter, the exchange rate appreciation on Korea export has many negative effects, the Korea economic dependence on the export of relatively large, fare of appreciation on export industry. Samsung Economic Research Institute’s report shows that if the exchange rate rose to KRW dollar 1050 won, Korea 91 main export enterprise revenue will reduce 5.9 trillion won. Won the recent dollar. 8 month won against the US dollar is 1200, has recently fallen to 1120, while other countries have declined, but the data Louis Vuitton is higher than that of other countries, the decline is very large. Kim Yong-Shuttle, the main reason for this is the effect of global exchange rate disputes, particularly in the US exchange rate disputes. In addition, the dollar dropped also affects the level of liquidity supply.

But prof international economic and Trade Department director Wang Yue Sheng believes that the current margin of appreciation of the Korean won and not too high, it is precisely for this reason, the Government of Japan Korea does not like the Government intervene directly. “Won in the financial crisis was once appreciation to 1000 following the devaluation of the subsequent economic crisis to 1800, slowly and appreciation, 1200, 1300, and before the financial crisis, dollar rate than is not very high. But on the other hand, the Chanel Bags appreciation of the yen from 110 to 80. If you also have the same 20% in Japanese yen or 30% of the level of appreciation, Korea Government performance may not be the same. Vincent wrist believes that if won appreciation, for domestic consumption and economic investment is a good thing, but for export, it is bad news. In short, short term won appreciation increased GDP growth slowdown in Korea. “Fare revalue helps limit the inflationary pressures, particularly in commodity prices remain high, thus contributing to reduce the need for monetary tightening.

Official release in the contend. Korea has a flexible system, but there is evidence that the Government or have interference exchange market. Korea Ministry of Finance of the aforementioned officials planning in an interview that Korea take a floating exchange rate system, the exchange rate determined by the market to reflect economic fundamentals and market supply and demand. If the exchange rate does not appear too high or too low, the Government will not intervene. “Korea Government will not intervene in the foreign exchange rate, exchange rate policy in Korea has always been a free adjustment policies, the Government will not be for export to pare, unless there are special circumstances, such as the financial crisis. “The Korea officials said.

He explained that the present case cannot be said to be the financial crisis, but there are two cases where the Government will hand the interference. “If a forex speculation, or the domestic foreign exchange alarmed, government authorities will need to maintain a stable operation of the market. “But he added:” but the Government’s intervention is Replica handbags limited to resist the chaos, the activity of the balance too. Kim Yong shuttle said that Korea’s financial market very open, very free exchange rate policy, the Government does not directly intervene in the foreign exchange market, it is because of this, that won the exchange rate compared with other countries have a greater appreciation of the range.

“As a floating exchange rate of the country, Korea naturally not possible to admit that he interfered in exchange rate, but in fact not true. “Korea certain people in the industry told reporters. 2004 Choi Jung-Kyung step down events make Korea government intervention in the case of foreign exchange. Before October 2004, the Government of Korea to the exchange rate market strong interference to prevent won appreciation, then won dollar remain at 1140 this resistance area. However, in the annual Government checks, Korea National Assembly condemns the Ministry of finance, says its responsible Exchange stabilization Fund was not deliverable forward market Louis Vuitton Bags intervention in the foreign exchange market resulted in huge losses. Choi Jung-Kyung, the Minister responsible for exchange rate intervention by officials also resign. With the end of the exchange rate intervention, from 22 October 2004, won-dollar fell below 1140 mark, and the rapid appreciation of the end of that year to 1035.

Korea’s central Bank, the official foreign reserves since this year, the month of September a new official foreign exchange reserves billion, reaching 2891 million historical high, not including the strategy of the Ministry of finance managers of Korea Exchange balanced fund a part of the official foreign exchange reserves to Korea Investment Corporation of the US dollar. The view was expressed that the foreign exchange reserve growth is likely to be the official foreign exchange market intervention. Nomura Securities that Korea’s Central bank is likely in September, the forward foreign exchange market intervention and intervention rates in the forward contract expires will not appear in official reserves data.

Why is North Korea so worthless?

As you probably know (front page of Yahoo), Laura Ling and Euna Lee were sentenced to 12 years in a labor camp.

Way to go North Korea, trying to prove a point to the world that you think you have some kind of …power?

Worthless idiots. We’ll get them back…

Why is North Korea’s government composed of heartless d-bags?

There is a psychological condition (folie a deux when only two people are involved) which involves a group of people listening only to each other, ending up with a belief system which has no, or very little, contact with the real world. Certain religious cults operate like this.

In the case of the ruling class of a place like N. Korea they have become involved in just such a closed circle, as well as being theory-driven to the point where they do not recognise contrary facts. They will, as a matter of course, control their people’s access to information in order to secure agreement and compliance.

It is not a new phenomenon. Ordinary people in the USSR were incredulous when shown films where the workers were well-dressed, drove cars etc. They had been convinced that we were starving. More startlingly, some government officials who had actually been in W. Europe still seemed sincere when they maintained that story. Orwell had a word for this: doublethink – the ability to believe, simultaneously, two inconsistent propositions.

Briefly, the answer is a psychological contortion which puts the victim out of reach of the facts.
