The average Korean has more bandwidth, is online longer, and is quite efficient at extracting information out of the web. You would assume that their tool of choice would be Google. You would be wrong!

Quick overview of US Search Engine Market:
To Search Engine Marketers operating in North America and UK, the process of finding information is relatively straightforward. Go to Google or Yahoo, type in a query, look at the results. There is a choice between “organic” and “sponsored” listings( yahoo paid inclusion not withstanding), and most people pick one of the top few.
Eons ago, web designers in US wanted to show off their skills and had graphic heavy sites. Unfortunately for them, their bosses who were more interested in using the website as a sales tool, soon found that the fancy graphic sites took so long to load up on Jane’s dialup connection that she just went to the competitor to buy that widget. The content sites, who wanted to maximize their CPM revenues also wanted fast loading pages. Fast load, more page views, more money. “Substance” reigned supreme over “style”. “Minimalism” was the order of the day, and given the deep emotional scars people carry from the dial up days, to a large extent it still is an issue. It worked off to Google’s advantage—it is vastly easier for Google to evaluate the text and tags of a page for relevance to a query than to see if that cute flash is providing value to the user.

Korea is different:
You just have to see the Korean mobile games to see what I am talking about—Craigslist is “out”, Hello Kitty is “in”. The average Korean user is a little like a power gamer in the US. Bring on the bandwidth! Net Café is a booming business, and well, we all heard the story of a Korean gamer who dropped dead after playing 50 straight hours of online games (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4137782.stm ). Heart failure, stemming from exhaustion, was the official cause for this 28 year old.
Here in the US, we tend to think of glitz, flash and overdose of pictorial icons on a website as a glorified neon billboard. Superficial, been there, done that, not worth the bandwidth. We also use an alphabet to form words and to communicate and get information—the pictures and the “rich interface” is distracting for us. The Asian culture, on the other hand has traditionally used “characters” or pictorial representation of whole words to communicate. As a result, a text only representation seems inadequate and therefore a sign of lack of technological prowess. I had a hard time convincing some of my Korean counterparts that Google is actually very popular despite it’s simplistic look. The one fact that helped my case was the stock price of Google and it’s market capitalization—120 Billion dollars is well, 120 Trillion Korean “Won”. Unarguable!
The Korean Search Engine Marketing is dominated by naver.com. Much more so, than even Google dominates the US. To understand why naver is so successful, let’s go into the details of how things work in Korea and how things differ from the US market.
When we are looking up something that interests us, we “google” it. “Googling” , a recently coined verb, basically means feeding some keywords in a omniscient benevolent search engine to get some results. Higher ranking usually means relevance to the query and therefore exposure.
In Korea, things work in the way Ask Jeeves wanted to work, but never managed to hack it. And they work well.

Why is Korea a “winner take most” search engine market:
The best way to describe Korean Search Engine users is “trolling FAQ’s”. The portals have a knowledge base, organized by questions. Wikipedia, DMOZ, Usenet and Google Answers, while great projects, pale in comparison to the “knowledge iN” of Naver. The system revolves around asking the portal a question, and there is a high likelihood of a lot of answers to that questions by people who cared to write on the subject. The user gets a ranked list of answers and can either choose to read the answers, or a list of similar questions. She navigates through the questions and answers allowing her to refine her search efficiently.
Naver has the most extensive database of questions, and therefore, it is logical for people to use it to get their answers. To get the most exposure, people tend to contribute there the most. Network Effect–giving naver a 75% share of the “question answer” market.

Downtown Seoul is a small place:
One would think that people who want to promote their products, thoughts would swamp the system with SPAM answers. Fortunately, they have some in built safeguards. All users must be registered to provide answers and their answers are rated by the community. The best answers rise to the top, and for widely asked questions it’s a more reliable way to rank than the “back rub” Google algorithm. Furthermore, the person who is rated high on a few answers gets a higher “rap rating”.
This is a very important point in the Korean culture. People want to be seen as ethical, wise and helpful. No one wants to be caught dead, seen as a spammer, self promoter etc. since everyone knows everyone else. The “reputation” and “prestige” is important, as it is in any “web community” including (say) Usenet. Usenet, it takes a while to gain reputation in a certain group. The Naver ranking software allows faster and more permanent feedback on the ranking of the person.

Problems of Naver’s model–Monetization and homogeneity:
If you are looking for “organic” listings on naver, you would be shocked. Hard to find, since there are so many “sponsored” links. The sponsored listings often blanket true results which in my opinion takes something away from the value of the portal. Furthermore, Korea is much smaller than the English speaking base of Google and has a much more homogeneous culture. The cacophony and diversity of opinion in Google’s index is sometimes missing from Naver’s iN. These facts lead us to believe that Google may manage to rise from it’s anemic 10% market share eventually.

Get off of the train in Jeongdongjin and walk only a few meters to the beautiful beach and its large hourglass. The beach’s hourglass is so big that it takes one full year for the sand in the top to fall to the bottom. At 12am on New Year’s Eve, the last grains trickle down and the hourglass is turned over once again as part of a grand ceremony, kicking off the brand-new year.

100% Lamb wool sweater and a good long coat. Babour coats are good too (a bit pricey but if you travel a lot that is good).

Remember to wear Jeans, tights, thick socks, gloves (knitted and leather) and good quality boots…. all these help too. Bring a themal flask so that you can put some hot drinks too.

Personally, if you don’t travel much in winter, try to borrow the coats. (Don’t take too many, a long and a short coat if possible.)

A good wind breaker is importance too. HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

The Fascinating History Of An Oriental Rug

The fascinating history of an Oriental rug shows that men first began looking at creating or improving floor and window coverings nearly at the dawn of human civilization. Initially, rugs were generally made from the furs and skins of animals, though improvements in weaving and also in the domestication of animals meant that they could be sheared of their wool, which soon became common in rug making.

All Oriental Rugs are knotted, and scholars aren’t exactly certain of when they first came into being. It is thought that those improvements in weaving helped to create the conditions that led to these particular styles of rugs coming onto the scene at some point. Some scholars believe the Egyptians were the first while others maintain that the Chinese perfected the true Oriental rug.

Just about every scholar, though, believes that this particular rug was not created — at first — as some sort of ornamentation or decoration. Rather, it was developed in order to provide adequate shelter from the elements. It wasn’t until later in human history that these rugs began to be created solely for their aesthetic purposes. Though rug making itself hasn’t changed much, styles generally have.

Carpet weaving techniques and innovations are usually thought to have begun about 2500 or so years ago. A team of archaeologists working in a valley in 1947 in Siberia in a region near to Mongolia found what they called a burial chamber that had a large (7′ x 6′) carpet within it. This burial chamber was the local chieftain’s resting place and is thought to have been created in the fifth century BC.

There is even mention made of carpets or rugs in the Bible. Describing the building of King Solomon’s Temple (1014-965 BC), the Bible mentions a covering or curtain of purple and blue with cherubim woven into the fabric. Also, scholars studying the rule of the King of Babylonia, Nebuchadnezzar, found that he prized rugs in all of their styles, colors and shapes.

The Chinese under various emperors over the centuries also were great fans of rugs and carpets. Emperors during the Sung Dynasty of 962-1279 AD set up workshops for craftsmen to perfect the art of rug making. Generally, these extremely high quality carpets or rugs featured Taoist or Buddhist iconography. The Italian explorer Marco Polo brought several examples of such rugs back with him.

Without doubt, the most famous makers of Oriental rugs in the old world were the Persians, whose examples of the art are valued extremely highly by many connoisseurs. These Persians — mainly during the reign of King Khosrow I (531-579AD) — shared their secrets with many countries near to them, such as what is now Pakistan. Khosrow I was known to favor certain designs in Oriental rugs.

The fascinating history of an Oriental rug is also a microcosm of the ways in which humans always tend to take something that initially was designed for a very utilitarian purpose and improve upon it to the point where the making of it becomes practically an art. These beautiful and unique carpets and rugs are just one example of this tendency. They are just as highly prized today as they were 2500 years ago.

Use a Job Description, Especially a Results-Oriented One, to Hire and Manage Employees

A Job description, while low on the sexy-management-tool scale, provides the most reliable base for hiring and managing employees. With a job description as the foundation the process is thorough, fair and legal.

Job candidates and employees come in a variety of dimensions, so orienting on them is haphazard. A concrete, job-specific reference is required. The job description provides such a base for writing help wanted ads, stating job qualifications, interviewing job applicants, orienting new employees, planning job training, and appraising job performance.

Some job descriptions are more helpful than others. The common-garden-snake-variety job description is really not harmless; for the most part it describes the job as a seemingly endless list of tasks where the focus of attention is candidate or employee behaviors—which is O.K. as far as it goes.

However, the crucial measurement of candidates or employees is not whether they can “do” the job, that is, perform the tasks, but instead whether they are able to accomplish the results that the organization needs by overcoming obstacles or taking advantage of opportunities. Job descriptions that merely list tasks miss the clarifying results that give meaning to the tasks.

For example, instead of describing the job responsibility of a credit analyst as “analyzes reports,” adding the expected result that sets the goal—and explains why the task is important—is far more beneficial, in this way:

analyzing reports.

A three-line structure with the expected result in boldface caps most aptly emphasizes and clarifies the result graphically. Of course, requirements could also be stated on one line with the result in boldface or italics to focus attention on it.

With a proper job description in place, job-specific requirements are readily available to be used for evaluating job candidates and employees, as follows:

HELP WANTED ADS are designed not only to attract job candidates, but also to screen unqualified people. Recruiting and interviewing is more efficient when solid job requirements—easily taken from the job description—are written into the advertisement. It’s O.K. to hype the company and its benefits as well but not to the near exclusion of screening requirements. Leading off with the contribution the job makes to the organization (the job’s key result), creates a more uplifting and attractive help wanted advertisement.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS should not be described in an addendum to the job description. The job description itself states requirements exactly as they are needed on the job. Converting a job responsibility, such as “Interviews loan applicants” to “Must have good communication skills” is a step backward in clarity—and legally dangerous. Specifications not normally included in the job description can be easily added for clarification.

JOB INTERVIEW QUESTIONS grounded on concrete job responsibilities avoid conversations intended to “get to know” a candidate. Examining job knowledge, skills, and abilities is the heart of the matter, but a more dynamic dimension is added to the conversation when expected results from the job description are used to test a candidate’s problem-solving abilities to overcome obstacles and her alertness to take advantage of opportunities.

JOB ORIENTATION is more economical and orderly when job steps stated in the job description are used to structure the experience. Actual job requirements lead directly and sensibly to standard operating manuals for action details. Results statements enliven the passing on of policy and procedure by providing an umbrella explanation of why job duties are important.

JOB TRAINING based squarely on job responsibilities builds job knowledge, job skills, and job abilities, and avoids frivolous programs that attempt to develop personal qualities and attitudes. A job description establishes a direct link and rationale for planning and delivering training programs. Results statements in the job description automatically become training objectives.

PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL forms separate from the job description frequently focus on traits and behaviors—leading to appraisal conversations that are too personal for either the supervisor or the employee. Confrontations can be minimized by using objective job description language (job requirements were either accomplished or not) to structure the appraisal conference. Goal setting planning and appraisal formats are also better structured when grounded in actual job responsibilities. When results are included in the job description, supervisors are spared the ridiculous situation of having to give an employee a good rating for “doing” job tasks even though he did not accomplish required results.

A well- and powerfully written job description provides an efficient, consistent and legal anchor for all employment actions; separate forms (usually trait or competency-based) are unnecessary, confusing, and potentially dangerous. Employment actions built directly on a job description will be job specific—just what judges and employees want.
